Is this still the actual Elocker? Or some computer controlled traction control foolishness. Can you still bypass the computer to turn it on when you want?

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
Yes it is an e locker. I don't think anyone has figured a way to use it except in 4lo yet.

It is an actual locker. There is not as of yet a locker any time mod. IMG_2610.jpgIMG_2608.jpg IMG_2609.jpg

So it looks like they changed from the old style to an electromagnet style?

So there is no longer an actuator motor on the side?

That's correct. That was one of the improvements on the 3rd gen. It's all tucked away now.

This is my third truck, and I've never needed a locker, but if ever I do add one, ARB seems the way to go.

I have the TRD e-locker on my 04 and it's never let me down, I haven't done the anytime mod yet but I find I only ever need it when I'm in 4lo anyway (with the kind of off-roading I do). That being said, a lot of people do prefer the ARB...plus you can have on-board air with an ARB which is pretty cool.

At least in the 2nd gens, the elocker is an 8" rear end, while the unlocked (that you could add an ARB locker to) regular rear end is 8.4", which is stronger.

Could I add a factory elocker? Would than be less expensive than an ARB?

I'm not 100% sure but I think the Sport and OR have different sized rears so I don't think you could add a Toyota e-locker without doing a whole axle swap.

Harrop or some other company is making e-lockers for US Tacomas now....not sure if for the 3rd gens yet. I know of a few members on here though with 3rd gen Sports that have added an ARB locker. I'm going to go ahead and assume that it's probably cheaper and easier to just go ARB.

The 8.4 as it's been dubbed when measured is still an 8" r&p. At least on your first gens.

I wanna see a side by side of the third gen 8 and 8.75 third members.

So yes after looking at the pic a little closer it is an electromagnet style. I can see the plug and the wire. I had a jeep JK front locker in my TJ unlimited. Great design and worked way better than the ARB.

ARB costs a grand and that's without the air compressor which is a couple hundred extra. And if you don't know how to set up gear backlash then give or take $500 extra for install if you bring the diff, way more if you just drive your truck in the shop. So swapping in a whole TRD off-road axle is way easier but there aren't many in the junkyard yet from the 2016+.

Since it engages electronically wiring it up will be easy and that way you can turn it on whenever you want.

The Toyota locker has always been haunted by wiring gremlins, I personally want nothing to do with one.

I laugh when people try to add a Toy locker in past gens instead of going with an ARB.

Edit: Toyota can't even figure out how to make the T-Case engage or disengage in a timely manner, last thing I want is my locker not to work when I'm stuck.

I wonder what actual strength differences are between the rears. Too bad the trucks are too new for anyone to test the breaking point on a machine that measures the torque. Given I feel like something else should break before your R&P become the weak link. Just curious is the housing the same size between the rear 8 and 8.75.

    Oh thanks for the picture.
