    THIS.

    1) not the easiest to engage. It's not
    a) stop
    b) 4lo
    c) push locker on.

Usually there's a lot of beeping at you between step b and c, and after a few tries of rolling forward or backward it magically goes from step a to b to c. Sometimes it beeps at you trying to get into 4lo when you are stopped, so now you have to back up or pull forward, jump up and down on your seat, rub your belly. Something. And THEN 4lo finally engages. Although when it does engage, it's GREAT.

    2) Can't engage anytime so I can't use it in 4hi or better yet RWD on dirt/loose gravel (younger stupid days, but so much fun getting the rear loose and spinning out "under control" pretending you are Colin McRae).

Stop, turn on compressor, turn on locker, Go = so much better. Bitching betty just beeps and beeps and beeps. It only takes about a minute or two to cycle through R/P/D and try to re-engage but it's just a bit annoying. It's like my wife: she's great and I've gotten used to her. But I would go a different route should the option be there.

Yeah... it's the trade in that's gonna kill your wallet! Just sayin...

Do what I do... have "promotion" days for job well done..

Have demoted days for when she gets a little too "chatty"

Have probation days when she's a little too moody

Some days you just have to "fire" and "re-hire" when shitstorm from hormones.

Exactly why I thought the Manual Sport was a better choice... Stronger rear end + the option for a useful locker if needed. 4lo doesn't work in snow, at all.

Wish they still had a manual tcase, old 92 4runner goes into 4wheel and low whenever without drama. Is the electric shift really better? Oh well..

I've used 4lo in snow a ton while offroading.

OK, maybe I should clarify. 4Lo and snow, ice and mountainous terrain do not mix well. Need speed and momentum to get up the hills when it's really thick. I've not found 4lo ever useful except for going downhill and wanting to control my descent speed. It's serious hills around here tho.

Yup, we have good hills too, but this is off-road trails I use it on in snow. Though a lot of the big hill stuff is inaccessible in winter or just too dangerous.

    Sport doesn't have a locker

Edit: never mind by option I assume you mean you can buy one for it. I read that as the option to turn it on.

Yes, my plan was to run ARB if I decided to. I still haven't found a use case for even the electronic LSD brake system, though. 4 Hi open did everything I needed this past winter.

Done tons of wheeling in my Xterra, and it's still open. Locker would be nice, but it's not necessary for most things. But I do have a winch for help when needed where a locker might do to get up something.

Hard to wheel over boulders, ruts, logs up hill with momentum. That breaks stuff.

In H4, you are automatically in TRAC (electronic LSD). A quick button press steps you up to TRAC OFF (poor choice for the name) which is stronger traction control as the engine output regulation is turned off. So, unless you stopped, pressed, and held down the button for VSC OFF, you did have electronic LSD... at least the lighter level of it.

    So so true!
The big advantage of 4WD is you do not need momentum in most cases, and that saves parts! Having traction control improves the ability to get over loose stuff or deep ruts that may put tires off the earth and would normally cause them to spin and halt forward movement.

Coming from old school mechanical only diffs it took me some major research to fully understand the different modes of the trac button.

So with electronic lsd enabled if a rear tire is lifted off the ground does it brake the lifted tire and force power to the other tire that is contacting the road? Simulating a locker? I'm still new to this ecu controlled traction stuff.
