Yes that is how it works. The only thing to add is the elsd is always activated so you don't have to turn it on

Cool. Thanks. I will have to test it out. Normal open diff you pretty much done when tires start to lift.

Some of the trails here you will be on 3 wheels even if you pick the right line. Pick the wrong line and you'll flop over. Just depends on the kind of wheeling you want to to. I would not attempt donkey trail in a sport without at least a rear locker. It's a lot steeper the the video makes it look.

Add shift to neutral between a and b and it's pretty quick.

True. And sometimes you have to try a few lines. At least with a locker you can get through the trail quicker.

I have yet to find a situation like that. I usually cheat at that point. Just hook up my winch. Haha.

Yup, this is why I would like to put a Detroit TruTrac up front. Its a helical gear LSD for the front. No its not as awesome as a locker but requires no attention from the driver, no electronics, switches, airlines or compressors, and easier to steer. The kicker is that when a wheel in the front is off the ground TruTrac redirects torque to the wheel with more resistance (opposite of open dif) however if the wheel spins too fast it wont redirect so people have to use a brake technique. The beauty of it is that Toyota electronics already attempt to brake spinning wheels which plays right into the hand of how the Trutrac is supposed to work, instead of depending on software to do everything you have software assisting mechanical gears.

If the truck is an '09 or newer, it has A-TRAC as well as the locker. Use the A-TRAC always in L4 and the locker only in an emergency as it was designed for. A-TRAC stops spin on the front and rear but allows easy stearing on the trail, unlike a locker. I have owned Tacomas with just the locker and since 2009 with A-TRAC. The A-TRAC is superior as it is locker-like traction on all 4 wheels and doesn't affect steering.

Zip is another option for air lockers. There are also cable actuated lockers like Ox and electric lockers like Eatons that don't require on board air. All of them work well.

I've been thinking of doing something like this in the rear of my 4runner. A lot more road friendly and cheaper than an arb.

So my base sr5 4x4 2012 has atrack? Or only the trd models. I saw some saying I had trac but not a trac since I don't have the a trac.

Can't be sure as there was a lot of talk about beeping. The light blinks anytime you press the RR Diff button and it doesn't engage, often because you aren't in L4 for 4x4s. It beeps only if you don't go into Neutral when you switch into or out of L4.

The locker was mentioned as a good idea for 4 wheeling. As the locker only comes on the Off Road TRD, then 2009+ has A-TRAC as well.

Your base does not have ATRAC. That is only offered on the Offroad model.

    You do however have trac.
