    Like, so many.
Can all of those be used in 4hi?

Optional, non-Toyota lockers can come on in any gear, 2WD or 4WD.

Sure. The only thing preventing the Toyota e-locker from being used in 2 or 4hi is the way Toyota wired the controls.

Yeah, wheeling anything is how expensive trucks are broken, no matter if it's just mud or sand or light water crossings. You're going to cause more wear and tear and have to do more maintenance. Some people like this but I'd rather buy a cheaper, older solid axle vehicle that I don't have to worry about destroying.

I just wanted something that wouldn't get stuck in normal driving, which around here, depending on the season, can get a little hairy. Plowing through 100 yards of 1.5foot snow with ice/rock/dirt underneath, up a 10% grade is about usual. Can't crawl through it and 4lo overpowers the wheels too much because you can't get to a higher gear to stop the tires from breaking loose. Can crawl over ruts and rocks, yes. I've done lots of that too and also broken lots of parts in the past too. This truck is too nice so I just avoid it...

I used to have the "I want to 4x4 everything nao!" bug but I worked through that shit in my 20's over 6 different 4x4's and spent a crapton of money. I feel older and wiser now. Maybe in 5 years I won't feel the same way and I'll eat my words here. :)

Hmmm, I have had 4WD most of my 42 driving age years and I wanted 4x4 to get to the exotic places safely and without getting stuck where I would need help because I rarely traveled with others. To me, having 4WD prevents breaking and does not cause that to happen. Have double traction (4WD) means no need to gun it and risk breaking things.

We are on same page. Having 4x4, lockers, trac just makes everything easier and less chance of breakage.

I wheel quite a bit. Some 7-8 out of 10 rated trails. They say 35s and lockers needed but I've completed them open diffed and on 33s.

Only thing that's failed me on the trail was a broken sway bar link in 6 years.

A lot of people don't realize how much difference an experienced driver makes. No amount of gear or tech is going to turn a noob into an off road hero.

Amen that... and lowering tire air pressure!

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
Depends on the surface. Where I am I'm always in 4lo with locker on. Haven't found a useful application for MTS yet.

I think, like me in 2009 and 2010, you get the Off Road for the locker and discover what A-TRAC is by testing it. Yes, it is different than a locker, there is some delay as the tires automatically lock. But, when you realize it is on all four tires and not just the rear, it is kind of exciting because the truck really climbs and crawls like a tank and can't get stuck (so far).

As I understand MTS, it is just different levels of A-TRAC based on the surface conditions you set it for.

I would like you and other 3rd Gen Off Road owners who have been using the locker in L4, to not. Use MTS and try skinny pedal as well as heavy pedal and see. Use the locker only if you actually get stuck or exhausted trying the different settings of MTS.

I think it could be very valuable as my extensive 2010 A-TRAC posts have been.

    Thank you!

I know what it does, and I'm sure in some situations it is better. But I'm trying to figure out what those situations are. I'm in a lot of mud, and it doesnt help with that. Probably something like a loose rocky incline would be great for it, but I don't ever encounter anything like that around here. What types of situations do you think it performs best in?

I have used it in sand, mud, snow, steep-rocky and rutted grades, pulling 2WDs...
Snow and pulling others is where I think adding the locker in addition to A-TRAC is where I perceived an improvement. A-TRAC only is active under 3 mph with the locker on.
