It's a last ditch effort to get out of a spot that you shouldn't have been without a winch mostly. Only good to around 5mph as well. As far as the original question this truck rides real soft compared to the '99 it replaced. I'm still going rounds with the dealer over the 4 leaf TSB issue.

only good to around 5 mph???? thats funny.....seeing as how i've ran my prerunner locked up around 35 to 40 mph in a field!!! and it was fun as hell.

keeping it under 5 mph is what toyota put in the manual for safety precautions. just dont lock it while on paement/asphalt.....now that could do some damage.

I've never really had to use it. I've had 4x4 on my last 4 Toyota's and never had a need to lock it in. Nice to know though.

Not sure I should thank you for pointing out possibly the worst vehicle purchase mistake I've ever made. I absolutely hate the open differential on the TRD OR. Apparently I didn't read the options thoroughly when I bought it otherwise I would have bought the LSD on the sport package. Last winter I got stuck on a small patch of ice on my otherwise bare driveway because it happened to be under the rear drive wheel. I had to go 4x4 to get in the garage. How worthless is that. I think I will probably cry myself to sleep tonight.

If the ice was under both your rear wheels i doubt the LSD would of been able to help you out any better than the Locker on your truck would of.

In the manual it says you need to be going 100km per hour or less to put the transmission from 2h to 4h and under 3km per hr to go from 4h to 4L

I tried to lock the differential, but like all the others having trouble with it, mine didn't work either. Even so, the point was that the ice was only under 1 tire, so the other tire was sitting there useless. Limited slip would have at least got me up the driveway.

I am feeling a little better as I have found differentials online for a few hundred dollars. So, now I just have to wait for someone to tell me I can't replace mine to get that knot in my stomach again. I miss the AWD on my old Dakota. Of course everything else with the Taco is a thousand times better.
