I just bought a 2008 Tacoma Access Cab 4x4, SR-5 TRD Off Road and a 6 speed manual, with 16000 original miles. It still has its original tires, brakes, everything.

None of the recalls had been done, so the local Toyota dealer did all of the active ones (rear suspension is pending), this included a new door sticker for the tire pressures, and something about TPMs. I noticed that new sticker says the payload of the truck is 1200 lbs including driver and passengers. WTF?

I just mounted fresh KO2's on it because the original tires were all weather cracked and sad looking.

Yes payload sucks. Look into leaf spring recall. Or add a leaf or new leaf springs altogether.

1200 lbs is what my Volvo 740 wagon was rated for stock. I had overload springs and beefy swaybars and shocks on it and I regularly went way over and it handled fine and was plenty sturdy enough.

so whats a reasonable spring upgrade for my TRDor that can handle 200-300 lbs additional rear axle capacity without making the ride too harsh when empty?

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Offroad or carrying capacity: pick one. A suspension properly setup for one will not be amazing at both.

@tacoguy67 I think you'd run out of stock length shock first?? I've never had airbags. I knew a guy who hated his on his Tacoma.

I think they either bucked or bottomed out?

Its a half ton truck so that shouldn't be a surprise. The surprise is that in stock form the capacity is probably way below 1,200 lbs. When mine was brand new I put 600 lbs in the bed and it sat solid on the bump stops. Total bullshit. So I made the dealer do the four leaf TSB which was an improvement but I bet that hauling 800 lbs would be pushing the springs.

well, my wife and I are both kinda overweight, so just the two of us are 450 lbs or something. my astronomy gear can be as much as 200 lbs, and we'd like to tow a small camper, maybe 250-300 lbs hitch weight.

I had originally though of doing airbags, but a local small truck guru suggested that most of his customers who tried them ended up taking them off as they were prone to failing at the worst times, and he instead recommended some sort of leaf spring booster, I'll have to ask him again and get the brand.

local toyota dealer tells me the TSB for the TRD rear springs is still pending and they hope to have it resolved in another month or two.

Don't hold your breath waiting for Toyota to replace the crappy springs because the "upgrade" I'm sure will be, well.... crap.
