How does that work though? Do you have to register it in Oregon now every year? Or can you switch it? Never bought out of state before

I'll still register it in the state of CA. The Title will go straight to the bank, but I'll probably have to make a trip to the local DMV if Oregon can't handle it online.

It's crazy how many people are trying to discredit the Pro (Not saying you are). I really don't see what the big deal is, every Tacoma I've done modifications and every Tacoma I will continue. Jeez guys give it a rest... Both are great trucks! I'd be happy to have either!

So true. Both are great trucks. In the end I was able to justify the extra costs for the Pro since I'll be keeping this truck for a while. Frankly, I know I'll be modding the Pro as well.

Spreadsheet to check costs of modding is doing it right. That's what I was trying to say.

Funny, I was absolutely sold on the Cement until I saw the Super White truck. I added the factory roof rack and some 265/70 - 16 KO's and I'm content for now. You made a great choice and you will love the truck. Congrats!

No, the truck does not have to be register in Oregon.

Basically, you buy the truck in Oregon, pay no taxes, and pay $15 (or I think $20) temp registration fee (out-of-state drive out permit).

Then when you get to California:
    - Get smog check
    - Get weight certificate
    - Go to DMV and get them to do a VIN verify
    - Go to the DMW new vehicle registration window with Bill of Sale, smog cert, weight cert. and VIN verify form
    - Pay DMV the CA sales tax and registration fee
They will then issue you a temp registration and you'll get your license plate in the mail in a few weeks.

TIP: If you pay you vehicle in full (no loan) the dealership will give you the MSO instead of the bank and you can use this in lieu of the weight cert since it has the weight on it.

The Oregon dealership could do this and basically collect CA taxes and registration fee when you purchase the truck, but the registration will be incomplete because you still need smog/weight cert and VIN verify. It is probably better to do all the registration work in CA. I seen in the past where the out of state dealership screwed up on the forms, and correcting other people mistake can be a pain in the butt.

I purchased several vehicles out of state and I always tell them to give me all the paperwork and I'll do the registration myself. Also, I see that you are in Pasadena, if you need to get a weight cert. PM me, I know a few places that will do them for $10 (don't pay the $35-$50 that some of the weight station or recycling places charge).

Are you sure I need a smog check and weight certificate? The trucks are listed as 50 state certified. Also I looked online and I think the truck might be extempt from weight certificate since it's less than 6,000 lbs.

    You are right!

Both of my 16 TRD OR and my 17 PRO was purchased in Oregon

They colllect all state taxes and do the paperwork for you for your residence state

I bought cars in CT and NY and same was done

Lots of dealers don't "trust" buyers to go home and pay sales tax

Then you go to do DMV and do vin verification

Also local dealers can screw things up with DMV too. I bought two cars from Glendale lexus and Santa Monica lexus last year

One overcharged me on registration (gave me refund later), other didn't file correct paperwork in DMV for 5 months

    You 100% need smog check

Also ironic you are the 6th person on this site to go to OR for their PRO

    Good on you!

Thank you so much for clarifying and your input! So just to make sure I'm clear:
    1. Buy Truck from OR, pay OR dealer registration and sales tax
    2. OR Dealer will send registration/sales tax to CA DMV, and provide me a bill of sale
    3. Drive truck home with temporary registration
    4. Obtain CA Smog and certificate submitted automatically online
    5. Go to CA DMV and do VIN Verification
Any that's it? Do I need to wait at DMV after VIN Verification, or is it automatic, and they mail me plates? Or do I pick up plates at DMV?

Yes that is how it works.

When you go to DMV, the tired state employee will come outside with you, check the VIN on your car. Go back inside, punch in their 1985 computer. You will get plates in mail (unless you ordered personalized plates)
