Looks at the specs its right there and will show no performance differences between the two. Being in the car business and been in my share of Tacoma trucks and they all feel like they have the same power. Maybe ypu drove a slightly used one with a KDMAX Pro tune.

The stock exhaust are all the same ( with exception of the TRD Pro). The only difference is wheel base or engine.

    Screenshot_20230503_074339_Chrome.jpg

There is no option for SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road or Limited.

Edit: a side note, the TRD exhaust could be installed as a port upgrade, this maybe the reason for the difference in exhaust note.

I said it in post 19, and Ill say it again, the difference in performance is the hood scoop.

The Off Road sounds tougher and performs better because it doesn't rely on decorative accessories. That sound you hear is the Off Road exuding confidence.

    as any have mentioned:
    SAME!

I will say; one of the trucks could have been warm 9(ish? even if potential buyer doesn't know it) and the other cold. When I start my truck cold, the increased idle is defiantly louder,,, as are many/most vehicles.

@22Coma6MT yes they all had the short bed and were double cabs. I kept going back and trying the sport and then the OR and there was a definite difference in the tenor of the exhaust and the throttle response in a positive way on the OR… and why I bought the OR

@Chew I did take them for a test drive… like a at least 20 minutes I think I would notice if it was cold. Your experience may be different but the ones I drove here on Long Island definitely different. Sport Dog

The only way it's different if the year, exhaust, and cab/bed config is the same is if somebody tuned it. From the factory there is no difference. Doesn't matter what you felt, thought, or would swear to on your Granny's grave.

Granny is this exhaust different or did all the dealers order their OR Taco's with tuned exhaust. No, no i'll wait.... Granny says it is factory tuned and has a different chip which makes it different. Goin' with Granny on this one.

I have seen some Tacomas come with the TRD exhaust. Maybe the OP assumed they were the same.

my stihl 440 has more exhaust rumble and throaty sound than my tacoma. the tacoma sounds more like an electric can opener when it just doesn't cut through the rim of the lid on the first pass, and you have to press harder as it goes around and around.

It’s the exact same engine, transmission, intake, exhaust, tune, etc from the factory. The difference was in your head.

True or false—I don’t know. I’ve read that MT trucks have a smaller resonator than AT trucks. Has something to do with the engine programming for economy and making a drone in the AT. The MT does not go into this Econ mode. Again—-no idea if this is accurate.

Maybe the “throaty” one had a hole punched through the muffler.

I think the engines might be tuned different between Auto and manual. I own a 6MT and have driven the automatic and I want to say that my MT sounds a bit dronier under load. I haven’t driven an auto in a while so I can’t say this with confidence but I have a feeling that OP May have something valid. Also my truck is an Access Cab, I’ve driven only double cab autos.

The off-road doesn’t have a real truck suspension. It has a soft plush soccer mom van suspension.
