I think the real question here is do you need short bed or long? And what color?

Since you seem to have convinced yourself to buy a Tacoma regardless, just be sure to send us those pictures once purchased! :)

Glad I could help. I tried to be unbiased in my reply because I know my choice isnt the same for others. If you want to swap to a sport suspension get into a local thread to you and also the Tx Classifieds. I've seen sport shocks and coils go for <$300 and even given away for free. Heres the Tx Classified thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/texas-classified-sticky.209832/page-1412#post-18162130 theres to many areas in Tx to try and guess which one your close to but all the big cities(DFW/Austin/Houston/San Antonio) have a lot of active members on here. There may be some other cities I've seen pop up but they dont seem as active. Oh and Welcome to TW!

Make sure you try both. Even if you think you like one over the other. Said yourself you'll spend the majority of the time on pavement. Why spend 35k ok something you know you're going to have to upgrade when you can get everything you need want in the sport turn key (or in this case push button)

I got an Off Road because that’s what I got the best price on. Lol

I narrowed my choices down to 3 manuals within 1000 miles. Two were Sports and one was an Off Road. To me, it didn’t matter what model (between Sport and OR) or color. The best price I got was the OR. I’m really happy with it. I don’t get the Sport/OR pissing matches. Like others have said, drive both back to back and get the one you like best.

I was in your exact same boat. Sport or Off-Road... I went with Sport with 4x4 for a few reasons...

    1) Like you, I'm not into rock crawling or taking a risk of getting axle deep into sand, so the OR features weren't necessary for me.
    2) For our intended use of ours, getting to more remote locations for photography and some novice/mild trails for fun, the Sport 4x4 is more than capable.
    3) I do like a smoother ride, but not spongy, so that dinged the OR.
    4) I personally like the aggressive design of the Sport.
    5) Like you, ours is my daily driver and it will spend 90% of it's time on pavement, so the build of the Sport to better handle that worked for me.

Bottom line, they're both about the same money, but you need to choose what you need based on how you will actually use it.

I recently bought the TRD Sport 4x4. Mine came with the hood scoop. Didn't need it but it sure as help looks good. I drove a base SR5 and then had them ship in my Sport .I like it, would i have gotten the off road, yeah, but they didnt have the color I wanted. So i settled with the sport with premium package. Worth it. Handles great and i mostly do city driving with very very little off road .

I went with the sport because it was 3k cheaper than the off-road. End of the year sale, specifically for sports. I had to buy a specific truck (as in a specific vin numbered truck) to get the discount.

Make sure you test drive both on the freeway with some incline . That away you won’t get some surprises. Btw I still love my taco . I learned to adjust to the way it’s programed .

I had a 2003 Tunda Access Cab 4x4 TRD step side for 13 years which I enjoyed every moment except for tight parking lots and the suicide doors. The ride was just right with the factory Bilsteins. My first Taco test ride was the Sport Model and I found the ride to be a bit harsh. Took an Off Road on the exact same drive and felt so much more comfortable. Since I had been to OBX N.Carlona in past years and had a blast on the sand with my kids, I did want to have all the traction control options on the OR for a return trip. There wasn’t a PRO to test which maybe the best of both , but pricey and no moonroof option. Lots of variables for you to consider, good luck!

I bought an automatic 2017 SR5 premium double cab. I wanted a raw truck with the least technology. I didn’t care for the crawl control, navi, push start, sunroof, etc.

All I cared for was 4 door, 4wd in quicksand shortbed

I got mine brand new close out sale for 32k otd. Came with the toneau cover. Back up cam, touch screen and reg sr5 feat.

It was one of the last 2017 in the lot in Quicksand and happened to come with the caramel guts.

I was getting 25mpg all highways.

    Now 14mpg lol

If the sr5 didn’t exists, I would have gotten and sport because it’s easier to swap flares than hood and paint. Also coz I didn’t care for crawl control. I don’t off-road.
I bought my truck to tow my boat and wanted to hop it up to look good as mall crawler. Lol

Only reason I looked at the OR over the SR5 4x4 was for the locker, so I didn't even consider the sport when I found out it didn't have it.
