Probably not going to have a huge impact

so the normal oil filters don't filter as well? that doesn't sound right. i thought the synthetic media filters actually sacrificed filtering efficiency for longetivity so you can do longer oil change intervals. but maybe the technology has improved.

that being said, i'm running a mobil 1 performance oil filter right now because the store was out of stock of the toyota oem filters i typically use.

Thats what I use in mine (and my V8 4runner but the spin on filter). The nominal price difference is worth it for peace of mind especially when viewed as cheap insurance. If I see a parts promo I'll buy a bunch and stockpile them. Amsoil ones are similar and made by champion too FWIW.

If you have ever seen these wix oil filters for the 3.5, they look very similar to the stock toyota filters using cellulose filter material, except they claim they trap particles down to 10 microns, and are good for 20k miles.

I chuckle every time I see the "peace of mind" justification for wasting money.

The statement flows easier when it's correlated to having more disposable income for sure. Also run oil analysis that many would view as a waste too. TRD filters along with Amsoil motor oil is still a negligible cost when doing your own oil changes vs paying for someone else to do it for you.

Wix XP filters are the better ones that use the synthetic media. Regular Wix uses cellulose just like OEM.

Does it need to be a HUGE impact? What is huge? Might you have an example?

The best example I can come up with is Wix XP air filters vs CAI’s.

Contaminants are the biggest risk to our engines. When you keep your oil clean you’ve mitigated the biggest risk and it’s not overly difficult to tackle.

Imo, it's like a guy that smokes a few cigarettes a day. He might live a year less than someone that doesn't smoke. Then again, you can get run over by a car crossing the street. My head is starting to hurt over thinking this.

Fram ultra filters 99% down to 20 microns vs OEM 99% at 30 microns.

I use fram ultra, plus the plastic plug for the filter housing threads in instead of pushes in, no mess.

I'm sure everyone of us has spent a little extra for "peace of mind" at one time or another.
It's amusing to hear people criticize spending 14 dollars on a filter for an engine that costs tens of thousands of dollars to repair if it has an oiling failure. I take the 20 micron filter, thank you.

The synthetic filter media is generally better all around. Higher flow, more capacity, and a finer particle capture.

So is this filter seriously better than OEM paper filter?

    TRD Filter 98% @ 20 microns
    Fram Ultra 99% @ 20 microns
    Wix XP
    Amsoil 99% @ 20 microns
    absolutely

it’s all about the “synthetic” media.
