I have a stock 19' TRD OR DCSB with the stock 265/70R16 kevlar tires. I'm looking at the ideal tire pressure for freeway driving. The toyota recommended pressure of only 30 psi. Sucks for mpg in my truck. Only get 16-17mpg if I run that. if I run 35 psi I'll get between 19 and 21 mpg.. that was on my last road trip from vegas to Tucson going through mtns and hills. Wondering if I should run 36 or 37 psi or if that would be over inflated and cause the middle of the tires to wear fast. Thoughts? My next trip is vegas to Missoula. More mtn driving.

It sounds like you have some miles on your Taco. With that, what does your tire wear look like?

These were my stock Toyos at about 25k, just before I swapped them:

    IMG_20190928_104421.jpg

I ran 35psi pretty much since new because I didn't like how soft the tires felt in corners. I'm running 35psi on the 265/70R17 SL Wildpeaks. They seem to be doing well at that pressure also, but I only have about 8,000mi on them. No wear to notice.

There would be a bit of variability depending on how you use your Taco. I like to play in corners, so that pressure seems to work well for me.

My 19 has 24k on it.. the tires dont show any noticeable wear yet.

You have 24k on your original tires and have no wear? Best case scenario, half of the tread should be gone?

If you have even wear at the mileage on all four corners, increasing the pressure for highway trips may wear the center, like you were thinking. Of course, additional weight on the Taco will play into that also.

Im running them at 33-35psi cold. Has worked relatively well but I don’t do much driving above 55-60mph.

15k miles and they may have 30-40% life left...

The freeway speeds out west usually allow me to run 80 - 85 mph.
I meant there is no abnormal wear.. such as cupping, feathering, or uneven wear, I am not sure what the tread depth is.. I typically will get 100,000 miles on a set of tires.. as I'm religious on air pressure and rotation and balance etc. But that's not really the question presented. I dont tow anything either.

I'm up on maint, rotation, and balance, but I don't think I got anything close to 40k out of a set, ever, let alone 100k. Nice work!

I suppose the best thing to do is try and monitor the situation. The MPG bump over 100k would more than offset a bit of extra center wear. 35psi certainly gives better handling.

I have 265 70 17 and towing a 3700lbs trailer I put 46 in the rear and about to 40 front. 20,000 miles of that and another 20,000 not towing at 38 all around. Towed from NY to TX to ME. After over 40,000 miles on these tires I was looking at them yesterday thinking they have another 20,000 left before even considering new tires. Try the higher pressures for a little while and see how it rides. I have mine at 33 recently and it felt
squishy and probably lost about 1 mpg.

My dealer filled my tires to 38 even though the manual says 30, I don't drive many highway miles so I plan on lowering to 30-35 per tire.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
31 cold and heat up to around 36/37 on a warm day so the guys that start with that are probably over 40 when warmed up. I'll probably settle closer to 34 cold once I actually get to drive the thing somewhere.

This is a key way to judge tire pressure. It is said that the optimum is a 10% increase. For me at 35psi, I will see about 38 on a typical drive.

Note that the higher the starting pressure, the less increase that you get. That was why the under-inflated Firestone thing was so bad. The tires overheated.

Ditto, I run 30 cold with Nitrogen and the air pressure doesn't fluctuate like it did with air. I might see the pressure get to 33 on a hot day, now when I didn't have Nitrogen I would see tire pressure get to 35. Nitrogen works well for me and tires set at 30,On a cold day the tires might drop to 29.
