    Sup dudes,

I am considering buying my first taco and was looking at the TRD OR and TRD sport with the MT.

The only manual Tacoma’s that are in my area are years (2016-2017). In your opinion, would you rather have a 2016 OR with moderate mileage or a 2017 sport with low miles? I do like the look of the OR A little better, but all I need a truck for is to haul my trx450r and go up to the mountain for snowboarding a few times out of the year. Are the 2016s complete trash and should I stay away from them? Or am I safe with the MT.

    Thanks in advance!

If the 16 has moderate miles on it then all bugs should be worked out or recalled and tsb'ed by now, they're effectively the same truck but there are a few major differences, the Sport has a slightly larger rear differential, a hood scoop, and digressive suspension set up, the Off-Road has a true rear locker and some extra tecno gizmos that really help off road but if you never use them they're just extra weight and complexity I suppose and has a progressive suspension set up.

Personally I would go for the Off-Road but I use my locker a lot when playing with it, if you're just using your truck to commute and haul your toys that you play with then either is capable.

I'd buy whichever one had the better warranty or less rust in your instance if you don't care about the off-road prowess of the truck itself.

Off road has the larger rear differential, sport shares one with the SR, SR5, Lmtd (unless MT all MT models have 8.75 instead of 8"). Sport stiff street oriented suspensions, off road softer suspension, locker off road, no locker sport. MT won’t have crawl control on any of them, that’s on automatic models. I think you get more mechanical advantages with the off road, the sport is primarily an appearance package hood scoop and painted fenders.

OR also has a brake booster which sport doesn’t? At least from what I’ve read. Which I believe allows the sport to have a 2s brake hill assist for MT which Off Road doesn’t have. A very MT specific difference and not often talked about.

I have a ‘16 OR so I am only repeating what I’ve read elsewhere.

Both are similarly capable and upgradable. Budget labor time for accumulator delete and flash ECU to 0B14 which requires an ODB connector which isn’t cheap but can be borrowed if you find someone near you who has one.

Oh yeah, one more thing. I dislike the look of the hood scoop and that factored into my decision unnecessarily. I believe it is actually rather easy to swap hoods (see the 3rd gen hood swapping thread for details) if you have a scoop. There are apparently more people who want the scoop and don’t have it than people who have one and don’t want it. Paint match on an older trick might be a small complication but at least know that if you pick the sport for low miles, that doesn’t mean you are stuck with the scoop if for some reason you don’t like it.

Honestly I probably would have preferred an SR with 6MT but alas they do not make one. I ended up buying a 2020 OR, mostly because it ended up being what was available. I'd probably stick with the OR for the locking rear diff and A-TRAC. The "upgraded" offroad suspension wasn't a big seller for me since I'm planning on putting in a lift soon.

To really simplify things, would you have rather have a rear locker or a hood scoop?

As a side note, with how insane the used market is, I would definitely recommend looking at some new trucks and then do some math on what the best deal for you is.

I have OR as I do some light-moderate four-wheeling in my truck, plus I’m not a fan of the scoop but that’s a personal preference.

You may want to check to make sure your 450R will fit in the bed, specifically between the wheel wells. I have an ‘06 TRX450R and it looks like it would be a tight fit.

I prefer the OR to the sport and bought accordingly, but if both are double cabs, I'd take the 17 just for the rear power slider as I use that everyday. I use the OR specific stuff, but not everyday.

The OR that I am looking at has 70k miles and the sport has about 18k miles. Both are similar in price.

2016-2017 SR was available as fleet vehicle with a DCSB and 6MT V6. Rarest config I believe.

Sport MT and OR MT both have the larger 8.75" rear end. Both are 4.30 ratio as well.

No question there, Id go with the sport with 18k instead of 70k for the OR. That said, might provide some bargaining on the OR to get the price lower...

Ain't nothing wrong with the Sport (except the skewp)

Hood swap takes 5 min. Did it on mine. Just keep in mind the paint codes and mix for black changed after 2017, so if you're looking for a swap candidate....

The brake booster on the OR is nice, but the Sport handles 5000lbs downhill just fine. Use your gearing, and don't speed while towing.

Wouldn't worry about the lack of a locker unless you change your mind and really start to off road. Lol

I'd 100% go with the sport. Swap hood if needed, swap (or just buy) OEM OR wheels or even better pro or aftermarket wheels if you really care, and if you must you can get the fender flares in matte black but since the truck is already black then there's next to no difference with that. Remove and/or replace the bedside sticker if you really care, lots of guys remove, plenty of options for custom ones, I think on black it'd be nice debadged.

Color keyed bumper is nicer than chrome (IMO) though you could easily swap with just about anyone if you wanted chrome caps.

Then all the $$$$ for your mods and upgrades :)

Mileage is for sure the difference.

Unless you decide the locker is important just to have / for resale /etc. Though pretty sure you can add lockers after the fact for front and rear.

This a 3rd gen thing? On the 2nd gens the E-Lockers are 8" and the non lockers are 8.4 IIRC. 3.73 ratio stock on the M/T.

Hmmm... Are the lockers motors the same? Might be time to go fishing for a turd rear end.

Then again, I remember the explodey gears debockle...
