I believe the locking rear diff is part of the trd or package.

Mine is a 6cyl. People at dealership didn't know much about the 2004. Knew 4x4 would have switch. Couldn't explain why I wouldn't. Don't understand.

DC V6 PreRunners should have a rear locker if you've got the TRD package. As far as I know, it wasn't optional (meaning you couldn't get a TRD w/o the locker) but someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Pictures of your interior (such as where the locker button should be) might help.

Also, make sure you do indeed have the TRD package and not just the graphics added later. Assuming still stock, you should have 16 inch allow wheels, Bilstein shocks and fender flares (black or color matched, depending on what SR5 package you have). I know you said the VIN verified it, but outside of perhaps Toyota having extra access available via the VIN, there is no way of telling just with the VIN if it is a TRD.

    Good luck.

Have the shocks, black flairs, and I guess 2004 2wd gave me automatic limited slip. Makes since, since I'm not 4wd, would be hard to send power to the frnt. I think mine just applys brake to spinning wheel and sends power to the other.
Thus all started because I'm trying to figure out what type of lift I have. If I have the trd suspension, what would be a cost affective option to gain 2 to 3 inches for a parking lot prowler. I do occasionally go off road but its limited to turn around, and washing it in the grass.
Not that I'm against it....just have not had the need.

Yeah without a locker and 4x4, you gotta have that LSD. Aside from upgraded shocks and tires (which I'm sure you no longer have), I don't recall there being any differences in suspension from a non-TRD model. Are you looking to add 2-3 inches to the already higher ride height of the PreRunner or do you wanna set the height to 2-3 inches lift in general (over the 2wd non PR height)?

Oh so you want a nice big lift. It already looks damn good. I could definitely see it with a 5-6 inch lift and 35s.

Also, if you could get some more pictures of it, we could help verify its TRD status. It sounds like it is, but the lack of locker surprises me. Maybe it was optional, even with TRD? I really didn't think so.

You mean its possible for any random person to go & buy the actual TRD sticker? What purpose could that serve the general public, other than to allow them to then go and sell their regular ol' PreRunner as a TRD?
    Oh this is very discouraging....

All V6 Tacoma's with the TRD package have the e locker. 4cylinder TRD models did not get the e locker. It does not matter if you are 4x4 or 2x4. V6 + no locker = not TRD

If you have the V6 and no locker (button would be a couple inches from the power ect button and you can see the actuator on the front drivers side of the diff.) then you DO NOT have the TRD package.

You are describing the A TRAC that is available in some 2nd gens (+2005 to be extra clear) and some other newer Toyota`s this is not an option in any first gen truck. If any first gen Tacoma's came with a limited slip from factory it would be a mechanical lsd inside the differential.

If you are stock height (looks like you are. It will be the same whether you are trd or not) I would go with a spindle lift up front ( only 2wd trucks can do this, doesn't work on 4x4`s) and a new leaf pack (I love my dakars) to lift the rear. If its in the budget I would do new ome or better shocks as well.

Think of the stickers like any other part. You can order them, it would suck for people to not be able to get new stickers if they got the truck repainted or just wanted to replace their old faded stickers. A lot of members get custom stickers too. As long as you do your research or just run the vin you will know if somebody just slapped on the sticker.

    Hope this helps

If I take a picture of my rear end ( differential not my butt) would you be able to decide anything?

Yes, post a pic of the diff from the driver side front. If it is TRD then there will be the elocker actuator mounted to the third member.

(as far as I know): No LSD before 2005. No Sport TRD (hood scoop and LSD) before 2005. All TRDs before 2005 were OFF ROAD TRDs, had the V-6, had the rear locker (2WD and 4WD).

I have a 2001 V6 SR5 DC PreRunner, so it's 2WD. I bought it new. It has a diff lock button to the left of the steering column, inboard of the ECT button. It has Tokico front shocks, which were specific to the DC. The reg and ext cab TRDs got Bilsteins. No limited-slip diff to my knowledge.
