I was having trouble deciding between the TRD OR and TRD Pro as well. I decided to go with the PRO. Yeah, you are paying a premium for the upgrades, but it's all factory warrantied. Can't beat that.

    That's half the battle
    The rest is finding one
This is the email I got from one dealer
"Toyota in their first allocation of Pro Series vehicles has planned less than 50 of them for the whole country. This is Tacomas and Tundras, but not the 4Runners. We received an allocated Tundra. They are going to continue to build them and everyone is going to get one before anyone gets a second one.

He confirmed that there is a model number for the manual transmission Tacoma. However due to the limitations on production he isn't comfortable placing an order at this time. We get allocations twice a month. The best I can do is review with him again in a couple of weeks."

Damn, I must be one of those lucky 50. I began working with my Dealer back in April. Told them exactly what I wanted and they were able to get one allocated for me. Corporate actually called the dealer a few weeks ago to ensure that I still wanted the truck. I had to sign some paperwork and fax it over to them.

Hoping for sometime in September. Not really sure though, still waiting on a VIN# and haven't negotiated the price yet. All numbers are labeled as TBD. Not expecting much, but I did get them two sales this past month. Friend of mine bought a Tacoma TRD Pro and another a Rav4.

Good to see you have a decent dealer. The one I was working with (past tense now) has been zero help getting a TRD Pro. I had to give THEM the pricing info when it came out last week. Hopefully I can find a better dealer and get an order set up.

I'm happy with the TRD offroad 4x4.
It's up to you if you want to spend the extra money on the Pro.
Some people will do just that so they feel like they have something most of us don't.
Like someone else said if you are going to mod it out don't get the TRD.
    Good luck to you.

I currently have an 08 Access Cab TRD OR with V6 and 6-Speed Manual. It is stock with nothing but a tire upgrade to LT265/75/16 Dueler Revo 2's. I bought it from my brother with almost exactly 80K miles on it, and have put a couple thousand on it since I bought it, including two trips to Azusa OHV to have some fun. I've also borrowed it before and have done some pretty crazy stuff in Death Valley.

Knowing what I know now, this is what I would do:

Get the double cab - unless you definitely don't need the back seats because you only ever have yourself and 1 other, get the double cab. All the time I wish I had the double cab.

Get the automatic. The 6-speed manual is a ton of fun and I usually am happy I have it, until I get on the freeway. I wish I had that taller cruising gear of the auto for the mileage and the lower engine RPM (less noise). Also for hardcore wheeling you'll want the auto anyway.

Look at how hard you will wheel. The Pro is basically a TRD OR with a bit more lift. Personally, I would find the extra clearance nice and I love the fact that it would be under warranty. But for some people, that lift is not enough. Also, because of the ring and pinion used on the TRD OR (and Pro), it makes front locker choices basically "ARB or nothing." You are better off starting with a non TRD OR and adding front and rear lockers if you need a front locker. As funny as it sounds it's easier that way. And if you need a front locker you'll probably want more suspension that the Pro adds anyway. Personally, the TRD Pro would be perfect for me, I just don't feel like spending all the money to upgrade, so I'll stick with my TRD OR and maybe add coils in the far future.

Wow nice Scrambler, my step dad had an 82 as well and I loved driving that thing. He only had a 2" lift and 31's, but it was such a fun summer vehicle. He sold it a few years ago, but told my mom he would have given it to me if he had known I was into 4wheeling...

Unless you want the Inferno Red, I say get a TRD OR and then throw some bolts on like Toyota did.

Better than installing aftermarket parts and voiding my warranty completely.
