Agree. If I had wanted an automatic, I would have gone with an SR5.

I have an SR convenience package. It came with cruise control, keyless entry, painted bumpers door handles and side mirrors, and a (manual) sliding rear window. I have added:
    Intermittent wipers $110
TRD OR fogs ~$175 (for EVERYTHING)
TRD OR suspension $300 shipped with a couple thousand miles
    AT tires $500 installed

All told not quite $1100. V6 tow package was not worth the considerable added expense to me, and I don't much care for a lot of the tech stuff that comes on the higher trims.

I don't know much in comparison to most of the members here BUT. If you're considering resale value at all I would go with a TRD. The resale on them is better they seem to be more sought after in general especially here in Missouri.

Also the big thing. You definitely won't need the locker to get your boat out of the water. Maybe 4x4 on a low traffic ramp with algae. Look at the brake packages on the different models. Any of the V 6 models will move that weight but a lot of people forget they have to stop!

If your main concerns are resale and hauling a boat I would go Trd and enjoy the extra features along the way. Look at the extra 9k as an investment.

This. If it has tow package with V6 then you can add on higher end items yourself easily and have a truck better than an SR5 for less cost.

Maybe consider the OR without the "Premium Package"

Only you know your financial situation but it sounds like you can afford to invest some pretty big bucks to upgrade an SR anyway. You will love your new truck either way but as long as you're not biting off more than you can chew, the buyer's remorse of "What I could've had" (by choosing the SR) is much more painful than the added financial commitment of getting the truck you really want (if it's the TRD OR). You can't put a price on the feeling of satisfaction you'll have knowing you're getting into your dream truck every day, not to mention all the OR's upgrades that you will likely learn to use and appreciate over time. Bottom line, if you can swing it, TRD OR >>> SR. You won't regret it and good luck!

I bought the SR5 V6 and added the wheels/tires/suspension and accessories I wanted. You can’t really tell the diff from an OR externally except for the lack of fender flares, and I like the look without anyway.

I would get an OR with no options. Mine only came with the +$229 weather mats/door sill protectors. Premium and Tech package are what you should be skimping on.

The SR is very tempting and I get that. Do you really want to be spending your time trying to get it the way you want, or spend your time enjoying your truck?

I came from a never ending 1st gen project. I was ready for a good base to start with right out of the box. Save your mod money and double your payment.

    Damm right.
That's why most of us are here.
I don't want a plain Jane truck like 500,000 others.

That was directed at the OP...

No kidding most people want to mod their trucks. I just don't think the whole get an SR and immediately change out the suspension/add a locker etc. is for everyone.

If I only had one vehicle, one project, one hobby and wanted a full on build I would have gone SR.

Some people change out tires and suspension on higher level trucks on day 1 actually.
Some hate the jbl audio they paid $$$ for.

Yep that's how I think, started looking at the OR and figured after I bought that I'd wished I'd gotten the Pro. Always think bigger cause you'll regret it later.

2018 DCSB TRD off-road. Only option was the floor mat mudflap combo. Sticker around 37,700. Got it for 34k before taxes and such. Previous Taco was an SR5 Gen1. I do like all the added toys.

Are you planning on doing much else with the truck other than towing with it? If so I'd say go with the OR, as it's just generally "nicer" and makes for a better daily. Some of it is subjective (better interior color, wheel design, LED DRL's ect...) but the better radio, power sliding window, smart key, and such make up the difference if it's being used more than just on occasion IMO

Not sure if it important to you, but the SR won't power speaker upgrades. The volume will be really low. The speakers in these trucks are terrible, no matter the package you get. Basically big alarm clock speakers. With the SR, you'll be adding amps etc to get it sounding right. The OR without premium package is really easy to upgrade.

Sr5 with the tow package a set of good all terrains you’d be set, throw in a Detroit trutrac ballpark 1k installed have a locker of sorts works all the time not just in 4L. But if the better equipped creature comforts do it for ya then have at it. Either way you can’t go wrong with a 4wd Tacoma

This kinda sounds like a better offroad vehicle than the OR, no?
