Test drive both models. I like the idea of the SR, all business no BS, but I like the goodies in the more expensive models. SR5 was right where I wanted to be.

I wanted the MT - soooo TRD it was. If MT is not a big deal, SR v6 w/ Tow or SR5 w/ tow.

SR without a doubt. You can live without the options. Locker is definitely not necessary for you. You'll find just putting it in 4WD, you can pull the boat out of pretty much all boat ramps, unless you're on ice or mud. And at that point, rear locker isn't going to help. Just get some chains if you're going to be in some rough terrain.

I have a TRD OR with P&T. Love it. But doing it over, I would go SR, add a small lift (OME), 32" tires, sliders and a rear bumper. That's it. Maybe a front winch, if I plan on doing some crazier stuff. I'd have come out much cheaper than the TRD (although the delta for me was about $6k, not $9k).

    Good luck.

Do the bilstien shocks on the TRD OR have any negative effect on towing that the base SR would not have?

I am wondering if the Bilsteins would cause sag in the back.

Of course, I have no idea what I am talking about. There are also the bigger tires and ground clearance on the OR vs the SR

Basically, is the OR better, worse, or the same as the SR when it comes to towing?

And, can you still install airbags (for towing) on the OR, along with the upgraded suspension?

Depends, what are you looking to tow?

Yes airbags can be used on the OR with stock suspension.

I have airbags on my SR, and adding the OR suspension would not interfere with anything. At worst both trucks have the same tow rating, and nearly double with a tow package.

The air bags would interfere with the "cushier" ride a bit. I can tell on my SR a little, but not too much. I would imagine the OR suspension with air bags would be more noticeable.

Looking to tow a 21' boat, wet weight on trailer is 4500lbs. Not sure if the OR is worse for this job than the SR because it has the Bilstein suspension and bigger tires.

I just finished swapping my SR suspension for OR suspension today, they aren't really too much different going down the road. OR is definitely less harsh when you run over a manhole cover etc, and thru rough gravel parking lots.

Sag shouldn't be more with one or the other, as far as I can tell the leaf springs are the same across all models.

This is a good discussion! I just purchased my 2nd new Taco. 1st was a 2005 2x4 Prerunner SR5, and I love it! it's still going strong! But it was high milage and I'm relocating soon from TX to Western PA, so I wanted a 4x4. I was set on a Subaru Outback for a bit, but never pulled the trigger. I finally just stuck with what I knew - The Taco! I got a 18 Double Cab 4x4 SR, with the V6 and tow package. I got it for pretty much same price you are listing here, approx 31K ish. I am only a week into owning it, but I did just put 2K miles on it accross the country. I love how it rides, and the standard features are awesome! I think the only thing I miss is the intermittent wipers, but I can get over that pretty easy :) The SR5 was over 3K more, and to be totally honest, I don't like any of the wheels on the SR5s. I don't like my wheels either, but I like them more then the SR5 ones. And I don't have the fender flares, but I kinda like the look without them. I'm a cheap skate so this value was great for me. While it's a bare bones Taco, that just means I can mod it more to my liking and taste. Looking forward to all the various mods I can do with it, Fog lights might be one of the first ones! You won't regret getting the SR and having 9K in your pocket if you don't Off Road, IMO.... But I'm a cheap skate :p20180526_144822.jpg

    CONCLUSION:

    I went for the OR.

I did get a great deal. The SRP on an OR + Tech package, with all weather mats, door sill guards, and mudflaps, was reduced from $38.4k all the way down to 32.9k. Thats $5500 off SRP ($2700 off invoice), which from what I can tell from some of the other threads, is a huge savings. This was on the last day of the memorial day event, and the dealer was 6 cars away from hitting their goal.

It ended up being 5k more out the door than the SR model.

I justified it by saying the tech package (blind spot monitor, sonars) was worth 1k to me, and all the off-roading stuff (in the event I ever decide to use it) was worth another 1k.

Everything else, such as the better tires, power outlet, charging pad, fog lights, smart key system, better speakers/nav system (which is still pretty crappy and needs upgrading IMO), was all irrelevent, so I said that they were all worth about $500 combined to me. I figure they are all going to break eventually anyway.

That put the effective delta at $2500, which should be justified by the slightly higher residual value on the OR trim. I read that the OR has about 3-5% higher residual at 3 years and 5 years than the SR trim.

So I said fuck it, and went for it.

I did some research on the towing, and got a little concerned that the OR would be worse for towing than the SR, because some people have commented that the OR suspension causes a bit more sag, and the bigger tires deliver less torque than the lower tires. So I got a little buyer remorse because I worried the OR would actually be worse for towing. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong. However, I am going to be towing well under the tow limit (I figure 5000 lbs MAX), so hopefully that isn't a big deal.

My biggest concern was that the Bilstein suspension would interfere with adding air bags for towing. CAN ANYBODY COMMENT ON WHETHER THIS IS THE CASE???

Then my buyer remorse went away when I suddenly swerved the steering wheel at the park and went "off-roading" by driving through the grass. No, this is not off-roading. But it was by first time not driving on a paved road.

    And...Holy Fuck

I am glad I went for the OR.

    The end.

Hahaha. I was just going to comment that you don’t ever go off-roading, until you do, and then It is all you want to do!!! You got a great truck at a great price congrats!

Sounds like a damn good deal. This is a good example of why you wait until the end of the month to buy. Looks like OP got a dealer needing to sell those 6 last cars, and were willing to do whatever it took to get there. Performance incentives are huge to them, and if they are close, it's the best time to strike a deal.
