Trd Pro Arrives today.. Any tips on negotiating markup?

    All,

I put a deposit on a 23 TRD Pro for MSRP. I called local dealers for something sooner and one had a 22 Pro for a $3k markup. The 22 Pro salesman assured me that his dealer would give more on my trade to make it “comparable” to the 23 for MSRP.

I was told that the 22 Pro will be delivered today! However, the 22 Pro dealership appraised my current truck (a 22 TRD Off Road) $2-3.5 k less than three other local dealers (including 2 Toyota) for just a straight trade in (and no purchase).

At $2-3.5 less on the trade in, a $3k markup, and a year “older” truck, it seems crazy to buy the 22 Pro over the 23 Pro that will be built later this month.

Although, if the prices were equal I’d take the 22 Pro over the 23 Pro.

So does anyone have any tips or stories on negotiating off a markup AND increase on trade in? Or in your experience am I wasting my time on negotiating such a large difference?

    Thanks!!

The demand is there so I doubt they will negotiate at all beyond a couple hundred dollars. I would have patience and wait for the '23 personally.

Sounds like you have challenges when it comes to instant gratification. Not that there's anything wrong with this, we've all been there.

If you have a deposit on a '23 Pro for MSRP, and you're driving around in a '22 OR- just wait a few months and avoid the drama. You're going to take a financial hit either way, might as well make it a smaller one. The dopamine won't last very long anyway- so if you're chasing that high you might as well have more money in your bank account. This time next year you'll be glad you waited for the '23, which will always be worth more than a '22.

Yea don't buy it. 3k markup on a year old truck is plain stupid.

Thanks all, I appreciate the advice! I’ve already determined that I will not buy it at these numbers (I’m pretty much indifferent on the two colors, but I slightly prefer the 22 color so I’d take the 22 all else being equal). I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on negotiating leverage? I saw a story on here were someone negotiated a $10k Markup pro for MSRP.

First of all, don't necessarily take all the stories you read at face value. Some of them may be slightly embellished. :) Second, as long as people are willing to pay these crazy prices we will have very little leverage to negotiate. When the trucks get to the dealership lots and sit unsold, then things will turn. Until then, it's difficult to play hardball when the dealer knows the guy walking in behind you will pay their price.

Give the dealer an ultimatum. Set a fair price that your comfortable paying and if they don't accept it, move on.

I would have done the negotiating when putting down the deposit.

Don't be too emotionally attached to the truck. If they don't meet the price you're looking for just walk away.

I spoke with so many dealers while looking for my truck that it actually became pretty satisfying to walk away from a truck and to hear the shock in the salesman's voice that I wouldn't be buying that truck. "But it's a rare truck, you'll never find another, it's MSRP and we only added $3000 PPF sticker to the hood and a $4000 tonneau....blah blah blah"

They make new trucks every day. Today they're even making 2023s. No way I'd be paying full price on a 22.

You already have a brand new truck. No sense losing your shirt on another new one.

    :boom:

What do you think the pro is going to fix over the OR? Just curious what's the deal with going from the OR to the Pro, first of all, and second of all, this soon...

You've either got the best or worst standing for negotiation. Either you've shown your hand that you hate your truck and want out, and the dealer is going to tell you to pay whatever they want you to pay, otherwise you are "stuck" with your current truck (worst standing), OR you can say "Hey, I have an OR at the moment, either work with me on the pro to sell it, or I just walk and keep my current sweet ride" (best standing).

As an OR owner - I wouldn't spend a dime more for a pro for all that fluff, but to each their own.

Cali != the rest of the world. Cali and Denver have had solid 10-20k markups that people are paying because they're....special. The rest of the world has a lot less for markups, if any.

Yeah I agree don’t believe everything you read. Also just like my local dealer I have bought numerous vehicles they will not sell new Pro for msrp. But my other dealer will because I’m a returning customer. I’m looking at going with a Tacoma sport instead of the Pro and build it the way I want it. I already have a 21 LunaRock tundra Pro so going a different route. Also my local dealer what I got from my salesman I deal with all the time his manager said someone will pay it.

My area dealer received a 2022 Pro on Friday. Offered it to me, any of my friends or coworkers for $7K markup adjustment. It sold the next day Saturday for $10K markup. New Pro was on lot for about 24 hours.

Remember the good ole days, about 3 years ago, when you could wheel and deal on a "left over" model year because the new models where hitting the dealers about now....I think those days are long gone, at least for a few years.

To O.P., not that it really matters now with the crazy prices but that 22 will be consider a year older in another month or two when the 23's show up on the dealer lots.

LOL, my 2022 TRD Sport 6MT hasn't even left the Mexico factory and it is already considered a year old. :(

Point out that when the CURRENT MODEL YEAR Pro arrives the market very well may have turned by then. Its decidedly on its way down now and that truck won't be here for a while.

Tell them they are $2,000-$3,000 below other the other dealers on trade in. And that you can make more than that on private sale and that they lose even more on that.

Then make your offer of $1k below on your trade and $1k on markup and then be absolutely ready to get up and walk away (don't play games, stay and talk or walk, not half of both).

If you walk you have a better deal coming, if they take it be happy to have paid "only" $2k over MSRP on a highly desirable truck in this insane market.

(adjust dollars to make you happy, but know what they are BEFORE you walk in)

$3k is a low markup for a pro. They are still holding at +$10k or so here.

Last week I traded my 2020 Pro with 17k miles in for a 2022 Pro. Dealer gave me $48k for my Pro and sold it the following day for $51k. Paid $3k over MSRP for my 2022 Pro. This was, BY FAR, the best deal I could find on a Pro. Just the fact that my 2020 sold for $51k one day after trading it in speaks volumes for the Pro market. I KBB'd my 2022 Pro today as used and it booked at $57k, $3k more than I paid for it just last week!

KBB is crazy right now, definitely playing games with buyers. How much is MSRP on the new truck and how much did you pay on the old truck when you got it?
