I pick up my new TRD Pro on Tuesday and will be pulling my boat shortly thereafter. The boat is a 21’ Anyone know if standard receivers work ok, or do you use a drop? If so what drop?

I don’t think you’re supposed to tow for the first 500 miles and no you shouldn’t need a drop hitch.

Drop hitch is dependent on the height of what you are towing but you should be good for a boat with no drop. Find your hitch pin that Toyota provided or guy buy an extra long locking one. And like the poster above me….dont tow until you break in the engine.

With your boat trailer level and on the tongue wheel, lower the nose 2-3 inches and measure to the ground from the bottom edge of the trailer nose. Note that measurement.

On your truck, measure from the bottom of the ID of your receiver to the ground.

Compare the two and buy the appropriate drop hitch. For example, if truck receiver is 19” and trailer is 17”, you need a 2” drop shank and ball.

I bought one of these (on sale $99) so I can use it for pretty much anything I tow.

I have a hybrid TRD Sport, and I can tell you it tows significantly better than my 3GT did, even with a tune. That 465 lb-ft of torque makes a really big difference. Hell, I can even use the cruise control while I'm towing!

I wouldn't go back at this point. That's for damn sure!

The 4GT does have some faults - small fuel tank, fragile paint, mostly unusable back seat. However, none of these are deal breakers in my circumstances, and the trade off in power, drivability, comfort, and convenience over the 3GT is 100% worth those minor flaws IMO!

You haven't had any check engine lights or problems other than you mentioned?

None so far! I did buy extended warranty coverage for a killer deal from Troy Dietrich at Greenfield Toyota in MA for a great price though, just in case!

I was a Toyota tech for about 15 years, so I'm honestly not too worried about the truck. Toyota takes good care of their customers and I'm confident that any issues that do arise with this new platform will be addressed as needed.

make sure to follow the break-in instructions. They usually require varying the engine speed- so no cruise control on the highway on your way home and you’re going to have to play with the gas pedal in an unnatural way.

autos are so much better for towing now that it’s almost an April fools joke to say otherwise.

Especially with a turbo. Auto and turbo make for a great towing combo.
