Small updates to the OP, I've now personally installed and tested an aftermarket garnish, everything seems to be working fine after nearly 2500 miles.
thetacogarage.com will be selling aftermarket garnishes for $39 including the push nuts required for installation. We will also be selling them preinstalled on our grills. OEMs will be available too but they wont be cheap, at this point with the prices toyota is charging for OEMs, I feel aftermarket versions are worth the savings.

Hi. First post for me. Been considering getting a new grill for my 2016. My truck has the pro style grill already, but it's not been cared for very well. Curious about the lettering though. I saw in the older thread that the T and A needed some black painting on the background part to match the other letters. Is this still the case? Also would the black lettered version simply be a gunmetal version that has been sprayed black? I'm asking because the lettering on my grill is blacked out, but the paint has worn off and the gunmetal color is showing through.

The incorrect color is not an issue on the most recent grills sold by thetacogarage, the backgrounds are all the correct color.

In the official sale thread of the grills from thetacogarage, there was a user who posted pictures of his installed black pro grill. I'll try finding them here shortly.

Mine seems fine, been riding it awhile. I have a 17, so I don't have the garnish to mess with, but they seem responsive, and I am happy with my grill. There may be some shaving involved, I just don't know since I didn't have to mess with it.

I bought the genuine Toyota garnish, and will probably buy the grill from Taco Garage because my dealer dropped ‘will need your VIN’ when I went to pick it up. Just have to put it all together now.

I like silver better because that’s oem look, all black looks good on the lighter colors (such as cement) but I still like silver better. I’d post a picture if I had one (of black on cement)

our black lettering comes in from the supplier like that, I do believe that they are painted but I’m not sure if it’s black plastic painted black or the silver version painted black after, either way, if you find them to be defective we will replace them.

I called my dealer to check on whether I could leave the aftermarket (pro) grill on the vehicle and said the OEM grill must be on the vehicle to service the radar sensor. It would be nice if I could leave the grill on, but this dealer is a no-go. They even quoted me $135 dollars in labor to re-install the OEM grill.

Ic so the first dealer did my recall about 4 months ago and didn’t question the after market grill. They did the recall before I signed the waiver so my recall was never closed out. Another dealer during my 10k service about two weeks ago wanted to do the recall again and had no issues with my after market grill either. Luck guess
