It is funny seeing all of the other OEM grilles for sale. There at least 4 on the local classifieds website.

So is there a way to order just the 16-17 model without the little panel? Looking at the last link posted, that sensor area is clearly visible and looks like shit. Some of the Chinese sites are saying 16-18 compatible, I assume these grilles have the "panel"?

See jayrobot's summary on the previous page. I think the panel you are referring to is the garnish for the sensor, the Chinese grille's do not come with it. The OEM pro grille doesn't come with it either, it is something you would need to order separate. The non-OEM and 16-17 OEM grille's come with a plastic honeycomb looking piece that either clips in or is lightly attached. As you can tell by other pictures here, it is still a noticeable piece, but not as much as the 2018 garnish is, imo. Your options as I see it would be:

    1. Purchase the OEM 16-17 trd pro grille (PT228-35170), but it is expensive relative to the non-OEM and 2018 pro grille
    2. Purchase one of the non-OEM grills from Amazon or Ebay as they all seem to come with the plastic honeycomb piece
    3. Purchase the OEM 2018 pro grille (PT228-35180) + garnish (53141-35060) and save some money vs. the 16-17 OEM. This would be around $170 + around $50, so still more expensive than the non-OEM.
    4. Purchase the OEM 2018 pro grille (PT228-35180) and see if you can find someone that took the plastic piece off their 16-17 OEM/non-OEM and would be willing to give/sell it to you and hope it fits

I would think the plastic piece would be a purchasable part with a part number by Toyota but I was unsuccessful in my search. Hope this helps, sorry if I complicated the thread. I was seeing various different reports of whether or not the 2018 OEM grille comes with the plastic piece or not and was just looking for confirmation. Hope the end result in the form of jayrobot's summary helps folks that wondered the same thing though.

I just ordered from Amazon $160. Shipped. I was torn between buying genuine Toyota, but I’ll put the extra $ towards Baja squadron lights which are not genuine Toyota either.

Just received mine from Areyourshop-a via Ebay. The posting was removed right after I purchased so I had resigned myself to hassles, but it showed up and is in perfect condition- no broken tabs. Cant wait to install!

Yes, no one was debating that. Here is a picture of a Chinese grill from the back. All I was trying to say is, if you have a Chinese grill that you plan on putting on a 2018, it better have all the holes and slits I've circled in red or else when you go buy a radiator garnish, it won't snap in. So what I am saying is, not ALL Chinese grills are made the same and this IS VERY IMPORTANT if you plan on putting it on a 2018. If your Chinese grills are for a '16 or '17, you can disregard this post...even Chinese '18 advertised grills will work for you. You get the honeycomb trap door with all Chinese grills. (You DON'T get it with a 2018 OEM TRD PRO grill from the dealer because you're expected to buy the garnish too). So, if you have a 16-17 and want OEM, do NOT buy the '18 OEM because of that reason.)

So which Chinese grills don't have those slits and holes I've circled? Well for one, the grill that comes with the TOYOTA logo as a whole piece that is inserted into the grill via two screws. This usually has a honeycomb trapdoor attached via 4 screws...if you don't have the slits, don't bother making it work for an '18. Again, this is from my experience going through two Chinese grills/different sellers. It will still work for your 16-17 though.

I haven't tried yet, but any recommendations for getting past the melted screws at the top?

Peel it back then unscrew? I don't know what's under there.

As suggested, box cutter with really sharp/new razor. It doesn’t take much dont worry, just follow the contour of the plastic and it’ll come right off with a few runs around. Just be careful not to slip and cut your other hand.

    Picture borrowed from @Irvin92

This is how an ‘18 OEM, NOT Chinese grill comes from the dealer. 16-17 OEM and ALL Chinese will come with a removable honeycomb trap door.
