    Good morning, y'all.

I'm a long time reader, first time poster...

Anyway, VW is about to buy back my Passat TDI and I'm going to turn around and jump into a TRD Pro. I've taken the DIY approach on my '04 Wrangler and am looking to jump into something without having to put the work into it. Hence, the Pro.

With that, I'm planning on the following:
    • TRD Pro, White, Automatic
      • MSRP: $42,760
      • Invoice: $39,613
    • Cargo Bed Lights
      • MSRP: $259
      • Invoice: TBD (Personal Guess: ~$175)
    • Charging/Connectivity Kit
      • MSRP: $179
      • Invoice: TBD (Personal Guess: ~$120)
    • Mud Guards
      • MSRP: $140
      • Invoice: $80
    • Vehicle Protection Premium
      • MSRP: $499
      • Invoice: TBD (Personal Guess: ~$274)

I suck at negotiation, and I know that I'm already in a bad spot since I have to order the truck. I prefer to approach a negotiation with all the facts and numbers behind me. I'd like to know the invoice price of all of the options in addition to the truck itself. I can't seem to find the invoice costs for the cargo be lights, charging/connectivity kit, and vehicle protection premium package. I've taken a guess by analyzing the costs on the other options, but those are merely slightly educated guesses. Does anyone have the official invoice numbers on those accessories?

Built out, the truck lists for $44,777. Best I can tell, after holdback (2%), the dealer will have $39,407 in the truck. $5k in profit seems excessive to me and I'm looking to make a fair offer, even though I'll need to order the truck.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed?

    Thanks!

    Jonathan

Too poor to list anything interesting.
You may be able to get out with 40K. Hard to say. I declined a bunch of dealer add ons, so my negotiating was fairly easy.

But I'm sure 39K for the truck is what they're really going for. Not the $80 mud guards.

not too many stories of people actually talking down the PROs from MSRP.

Best bet, price out several dealerships. See who gets you the best price.

Lie to one dealership saying X dealer will get it for $1500 less then them. See what happens.
DONT buy the same day. Best advice I can give. Hold off and wait.

Absolutely! I just like to remove any and all wiggle room on their end. Hard to argue with cold hard numbers, right? Thanks, man!

Could be ballsy and walk in with a filled out check for $40K.

Or a briefcase full of cash.

I'd honestly go with the briefcase.

Good call. I was thinking about getting the online sales email address for all the area dealers (I live in Houston) and doing something similar. I'm in a good position where I don't NEED to get in the vehicle ASAP. Even when VW buys my Passat back, I've got my Jeep to drive in the meantime.

    Thanks!

Sounds like a plan. Can you hook my up with $40k? I've got the briefcase...

sucks you are in Houston. I am in Oklahoma. Our area is pretty well known to hold off for MRSP. They know they will sell no matter what. Hope the best for you my friend!!!

If you live in Houston, I got my taco from Demontrond Toyota (on the way to Galveston). Good guys, never had an issue with them. And they didn't give me the bullshit runaround like the other major dealers in Houston did. They actually found the truck I wanted when it was shipped out, and had them drop it off at the dealership.

That's my worry. I suppose if I pit a few dealers against each other, maybe someone will cave? A little bit of profit is better than none, right?

best way to do it for sure. Dont be afraid to call/look in the Dallas area. Show you have no problem driving a few miles to get one.

    Still waiting for it
Don't waste time with an order. I placed 2 deposits at 2 different local dealers and waited 10 weeks and never even got an allocation. I did get a negotiated price $500 above invoice and they were happy to take my $1000 deposit.

There is no "order process". Your deposit is a reservation against their "allocation" of a Pro. There's 1) no guarantee toyota will ever grant that dealer the allocation specific to your order, 2) that dealer will honor the deal- as in your well negotiated truck could be sold out from under you if there's an available buyer willing to pay sticker.

If it's in stock, expect to pay sticker. Negotiate on bolt on accessories and dealer featured add on. I paid 43.9 and it had tons of stuff I'll take off and sell.

Best bet, use cars.com, find a dealer that will work with you and be reasonable, and get one while you can.

I paid a few hundred and had at dropped at my doorstep. No time at all at the dealership.

    I can afford Gas.
I just got one. All I can say is in California - Negotiating? You will be negotiating whether you will be buying it or someone else. Just my .02. They are brutal.

At the end of the day I was who was Nice and Had the one I wanted. Everyone was willing to sell me the one I didn't want.

    None.
You can try to pit two dealers against each other on price if you're the only guy interested in that TRD Pro. Odds of that approach zero. Keeping it limited production means, so far at least, that demand is outstripping supply. If you don't have to pay right near MSRP you'll be a super hero.

Put yourself in the seller's shoes. No such thing as excessive profit. If I have what everyone (or enough of everyone) wants I can pick the price. You'd do the same if you created some widget everyone wanted.

Except in the dealer's eyes, a TRD pro will sell for MSRP for the next person.

    Excessive profit????

    Says who?

Walk in and tell them they owe you a truck for free, then.
