    Hey guys,

I posted a thread last week about a creaking/popping noise I was getting from the front end on my 2021 pro. I noticed the sound after the 1/2” top plates were installed. After 2 different shops and several days, a local 4x4 shop determined that the noise is coming from the coils themselves when slightly compressed.

Have any of you guys gotten any creaking noises from your fox shocks? Ive seen that 4Runner Pros had issues with this, but couldn’t find much on the Tacomas.

No issues with mine either, but it's still stock for now.

Remove the top plate and check for noise. This seems fairly simple.

Have someone bounce your front end while you’re under it (maybe have your wheels locked on either side) to help verify the diagnosis. I had a similar noise that ended up being the LCA bushing and only made noise on suspension travel.

I would leave the plates off, though. In the event that something is out of whack with them, you don’t want to go into the dealer with an altered product (even if they shouldn’t impact that much).

The shop I took it to found the sound coming from the actual coil, I was more interested to see if someone had run into this before

Just hit 30,000 miles the other day; no suspension-related issues with my 2019.

No problems on the 21, but I took my 19 in with 35,000 and had them replace the fronts due to a “leak”. If it’s still under warranty take the top plates off and take it up there for warranty work. Hopefully they can either replicate and fix. It doesn’t hurt to give it a try.

If you get the chance make sure you show the actual technician what it’s doing that way they can’t say they couldn’t replicate. Should have thrown that in there.

Hope that helps. If they do replace then verify no noise and if you decide to put the top plates back on and it comes back then you’ll know the problem. Hopefully you get it resolved.

Sorry to resurrect this thread years later, but did you ever figure out what was causing the sound? I bought some TRD Pro Fox take-offs and installed them and it sounds like both coils creak when slightly compressed. I can't figure out what is causing it...doesn't sound like the shock, it sounds like it's the actual coils. The top hats look good and so do all the bushings.

It's possible that it might also be the lower control arm shock bolts see here

Yeah, mine has been purrrfect -knock on wood. Hell, it's been good for the local economy too; ever since my friend laid eyes on it he's dropped $5000‘ish into his sr5 4x4 dblc ….i still call his truck 4-low, though. ;-)

It's been known to happen for some people due to the coil design.

When Eibach released their TRD Pro lift springs (based on the OEM design, full coil on both top and bottom) enough people complained about the squeak that they redesigned the springs with a flat-ground top on the coils which stops the squeak.

If you read through the rabbit hole thread posted above you can get more details but that's the gist. Mine have been squeaking for years but I just tune it out.

I've got a brand new set of the updated Eibach lift springs if anyone is interested in working out a deal. They were sent as a replacement for the OG design that squeaks but I never got around to installing them.

    To expand on Babybilly's post…
I'd try to isolate the squeak by applying a lubricant to the inner top hat bushing and then working my way up toward the upper most bushing. As far as rabbit holes go the linked rabbit hole contains lots of good reading material, including guys managing the squeak with the appropriate lubricants.
