That isn't great but not terrible. If you got exactly what you want and you're happy then that's all that matters. Time is money and searching around for months to get the best price probably isn't the best use of time for some people. Congrats!

From what I've read, car/truck prices are starting to decline. That applies to both new and used. According to JP Morgan Research, "In 2023, prices are expected to decline by 2.5% to 5% for new cars and by 10% to 20% for used cars." That said, The Wall Street Journal is recommending that buyers wait until Fall 2023 before buying. Here is a very good article from Kelley Blue Book on how to avoid dealer markups (note that Toyota is one of the brands with low inventory): https://www.kbb.com/car-advice/buyer-beware-dealer-markups/

My daughter just purchased a ‘23 Pro in Texas for $1,700 off list and with no dealer installed items or fees on New Years Eve.

Nope. I just checked it. The “chrome” bumper shell is plastic.

Close. Sensors cannot see thru the chrome metallic coating on the plastic bumper cover.

Huh. Guess they do it different on the Taco than the Tundra. I just assumed they did the metal on both. Guess I'm an ass for assuming.

Lift, wheels, tires, sliders, and skidplates...so far.
I got ripped off and paid WAY over the MSRP. I can't remember how much over I paid but it was a lot. There were no other good choices for new trucks though because of the microchip shortage or whatever. :/

I wouldn’t blame anyone for paying some markup, especially for a M/T. I paid msrp, but had to Uber to the airport early am for $60, buy a one way ticket for $240, a night’s stay at a hotel along the way for $140 (have family in Portland so I just stayed the second night with them instead of powering through) and two-ish tanks of gas for $120-ish (not including the full one I left the lot with). Throw in a few meals along the way, maybe out about $600, plus 2-ish days of driving and 900 miles on the truck.

The annoying bit for me is trying to get the title forwarded to my state’s DMV, since I bought it in CA, my dealer was adamant about titling it in CA instead of getting the pre-title doc (can’t remember the name) to my local dmv via mail. So I’m waiting for CA DMV to get a physical title to Toyota financial and then for them to turn it around to my local dmv before I can get the official plates for my car. Honestly that part really isn’t a huge deal but I want to refinance with my local credit union but I can’t until it’s titled in the state. My local cu rate went up another 1% already in the last 5 weeks.

Because of that too I had to pay about $2.5k out of pocket vs rolling it into my financing for the difference in sales tax from the dealer location and my local sales tax.

Again, don’t blame anyone for paying markup to just have it in your driveway. Maybe it’d be different if 4th gen wasn’t around the corner, but especially for a Pro, only you can put a price on your time. I didn’t want to put a deposit down on a wishful allocation while potentially missing out on another allocation at another dealer only to be waiting and waiting and waiting.

Yikes. Hearing stories like these, I feel super blessed that I was referred by the guys that I was. There were some communication hiccups, but the dealership bent over backwards to accommodate my wants.

Yeah, I already have general anxiety disorder anyways so I always find a way to think of the worst possible scenario…hah. But it’s fine, I have a 60 day temp plate officially in WA now, and I can extend it if needed while we wait.

My only recommendation for buying out of state is talk to your local dmv office beforehand and get their explicit instructions to pass on to your dealer and stand firm. Hell, talk to the local dmv of the state you’re buying from too to make sure you can speak to what they care or don’t care about.

Either way, I’m happy with my decision. A few dealers have called me back with their OR MT allocations coming in and I love telling them I bought a Pro for msrp.

Well, what that CA dealer did was totally not legal. They can't title it in CA. Unless they lied about your address, or titled at a false address. It gets titled and registered to buyers address. No matter what state buyer is from. You got totally fucked.

Nah, I’m not the title holder, Toyota Financial is. It was registered under my name for a one way trip permit only valid for a couple of days. What they did was charge me the lowest CA sales tax. I called the CA DMV and their response was, “that was a dumb way to do it”

You should only be on title, and Toyota financial lein holder, is proper way. There's no way CA tax should been paid at all. I would contest that. Get your money back.

You aren't the only one not buying the dealers manual allocation. Toyota sold 17,851 Tacomas for the month of 1/23. That's down from 12/22 where Toyota sold 20k+ Tacomas. January sales are probably usually low, after the holidays and before tax season. Most people aren't looking for a new vehicle in January.
