I bought a trd skid plate and haven’t have the chance to install it as of yet. My question is, people are commenting about the bolts being weak and not to overtight. Would it be better to buy better/stronger bolts for the skid to prevent this from happening?

It’s not the bolts breaking. It is the weld nut(s) in the frame cross supports that break loose.

I think it is the spot welded nuts in the that are a concern, if you over torque the bolts they could break free.

Oh wow, not good. Can this be welded back on the frame if one of the weld nuts breaks?

The nuts are inside the cross bar supports. How people who had to deal with the issue, handled it, is unknown to me. I did read somewhere that somebody had some success welding a nut back up in there. Me, I think I would go the threadsert route, but that’s conjecture since I have not had to actually deal with it.

What I did to be on the safe side was set my torque wrench to 32.75 ft-lb for 17 mm bolts (front and middle) and 20.75 ft-lb for the 12 mm bolts (rear). I did not have any problem when I did this and the bolts felt really tight even with this minimally decreased torque compared to spec (33 ft-lb for front/middle and 21 ft-lb for the rear bolts).

I recently bought a used one but it didn't come with bolts...just went to lowe's to get some. Also, I got the wrong ones for the rear so right now, I'm riding around with just the front and middle bolted down, still very sturdy!

Did you also buy the spacers that go in between the plate and attachement points?

    All the things!
Used bedliner on my skid and added some @TUFSKINZ

Turned out pretty good. Hopefully this holds up better than spray paint.

There are spacers attached to the bolts/plate.

While were talking about the TRD skid plate how much less does it weigh than the plate ones on the Sport/OR?

I think it weighs a lot more (at least it felt that way when I installed mine) than those stock plates on the Sport/OR. It's listed weight is 27 lbs based on this.

15 or so lbs heavier... its an actual skid vs. tin foil / splash shield
