Yeah, it was an insanely good price. With a 4th of July sale you might be able to find one for around $350ish.

Did you check if the bolts are installed incorrectly?
The front and middle screws/ spacers arrive incorrectly. You will need to switch them before the install. The LONGER screw and spacer must be in the front, and shorter in the middle.(This only applies to the non-OEM)

For those that have em, would you say the TRD skid is worth the money just to be able to get to the oil filter? I have an off-road and I have yet to change the oil on it but I read you have to take off the skids to do so. Seems like a lot of money to spend to save 15 minutes of time every 10k miles, but I may be over simplifying the issue.

I would not buy the skid just for the oil filter access plate. I would buy the skid if you need extra protection off roading or just like the 'looks' of it.

You have a lot more room removing the OEM OR splash shield during an oil change and it's only a few bolts and weighs nothing. (If oil change ease and access is your primary concern)

Right on thanks for the honest feedback. Yeah oil and access would be primary reasons. I haven’t had much opportunity yet to off-road (handful of short trips through the CA hill trails) to decide if I need more protection. I’m kind of a “if it breaks, I’ll buy something stronger” kinda guy. Until then, I’ll stick with factory. Thanks again!

The flimsy sheet metal splash guard that comes on the OR is not really a skid plate. I can bend it with my hands. On the other hand, the TRD skid plate is 1/4” aluminum and quite sturdy albeit not as sturdy as some aftermarket skids. My TRD skid has stood up to some serious abuse from large rocks. I don’t think the splash guard in the OR would have faired as well.

That said, if you aren’t exposing your truck to the risk of hitting rocks, you probably won’t get much value out of it.

It’s not likely the oil access door is worth it. The OR splash guard is probably just as easy to remove. On the other hand, the TRD skid plate is significantly heavier and much trickier to remove and reinstall thus the access door is a nice touch.

I definitely bought the OR to do fun shit off-road but that’ll be probably 5% of my driving. You bring up a good point about how thin the metal is if you can bend it yourself. I’d like to only damage the skids and not what’s behind it so if they’re “paper thin” and I’m risking serious damage to undercarriage components, then maybe I should consider it. I’ll pop it off next weekend and examine it.

My truck is off the road no more than that, but I do expose it to fairly high damage risks. The skid has slid over rocks big enough to lift the front end off the ground and smacked the ground many times. For me though it is more of an insurance policy than a tool to get over obstacles.
