I was 99.9% sure I'd be sporting a Tacoma, just before I pulled the trigger I noticed
a half dozen New Rangers in my local area so hopped on the inner web and I clicked off
as soon as I saw 4cyl & turbo

I really doubt that any New Ranger would hold up to what I put my '88 through

What makes you think it won't last 200K miles? A modern turbo should last that without issue. And a turbo 4 cylinder has less moving parts than an N/A V6.

I'd 100% have gotten the turbo motor if Toyota offered one as the top option.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.

It’s common knowledge that the higher pressures and heat generated by a turbo engine will increase engine wear. Ford ecoboost is a disaster. Yes, they’ve got better but still riddled with worn bearings, stretched timing chains, and blown head gaskets. Go ahead and buy one but no way for me. I value my money and putting it into vehicles is a waste.

I read this article and could not find where it said the Tacoma was ranked at the bottom??
It had the same generic ranking as the others. Pretty useless article

I think the ecoboost motors have proven to be reasonably reliable in the F150. Would a different engine be a better bet if you're planning on going well past 200,000? I'd say so, but the percentage of vehicles that go that long is minuscule and especially as a single owner vehicle.

Something to consider, going off Fuelly averages and assuming gas at $3 per gallon. A 2.7 F150 would have burned over $10,000 less worth of fuel at 200,000 miles than a Tundra.

I had a 3.5 ecoboost. Excellent engine. The 3.5 and 2.7 don’t suffer from bearing or head gasket issues. The 3.5 does have timing issues but that’s a design flaw not because it’s turbo. Ford has had issues with timing components since the 3v 5.4

The 2.7 had been pretty trouble free and would make a killer mid size engine. Options are always great but I prefer the power delivery of a turbo motor.

There is not doubt those engines have exceptional power. My friends ecoboost 3.5 in his 2016 F150 would tow his boat up the canyon. Half way up every time and yes, every time, would overheat and go into a limp mode that wouldn’t let him go over 40mph. 3 years later it swallowed the turbo for a $3500 repair. When it worked and I drive it a ton on fishing trips it really got up and went. He was so happy to trade trade thing in for a Ram Rebel. He still has the rebel which has been much more trouble free than the F150 and it’s a fiat product. It tows his boat with no issues up the 6.5% grade canyon.

There's a difference between owning something and being a fanboy. I bought a Tacoma because I think its the best mid-sized truck. That doesn't mean it's without its flaws or that the competitions trucks are all shit. If you can't see that I think you know which side of the fence you fall on.

Sounds like a problem with the radiator. There have been more than a few with partially plugged up radiators reported. Sucks about the turbo but that's not the norm. There's well over 2 million of these road so some are going to have issues.

But I don't blame him for jumping ship after that happened. I would have too. I had the wiring to my ABS pump burn up in 15 F150 (at 50K miles) and Ford couldn't tell me why or when a new harness would be available. And said it's not part of the powertrain so no warranty. Got it fixed (patched) and traded it in on my Tacoma the day I got it back.

The wire looked like this from the main fusebox all the way to the pump. Took some other wires out with it too. Needless to say I wasn't happy to find that...

I've owned more Ford vehicles than any other brand. Their QC went to complete %$#@ in the 90's and early 00's and pushed me to Toyota. They've gotten better as I currently own a '15 Mustang GT, that I ordered new in '15 and has been flawless. I just traded-out of a '17 F-250 (6.2 Gas) for the Taco ONLY because trade prices are so good and I never really needed the capability of a F250...and a real pain to park, at times. Otherwise, it was a great truck. Screwed together well, 6.2 had decent power and the room was fantastic. Honestly one of the best highway travel vehicles I have ever owned. I would order a Raptor, today, if they would put the 7.3 Gas motor but no chance with the 3.5 EB, regardless of how much power it makes. I work in construction and have co-workers with EB trucks and NONE of them say they will get another one.

This exactly. Turbo's are great fun to drive when new, but they are more "high-strung" We had a GTI Turbo, awesome fun car to drive, but by 60k miles the turbo started making weird knocking sounds and clatters. I'd much rather have a naturally aspirated motor for better reliability. And, honestly, I'm hoping this 3.5 will last me until it can be replaced with a practical electric pickup. Probably 15+ years out, our so. But turbo is not the "solution" that a lot of people think it is.

I know several guys with F150 ecoboost motors (both 2.7 & 3.5) that have north of 225,000 miles and have had no repairs made to the trucks. Proper maintenance is all they do. They all tow routinely as well. Maybe they got lucky?

It's probably only a matter of time before Toyota goes the turbo route, I believe.
