So i saw someone online selling a sport hood for 300 dollars, the corners are bent in and would take some work to get it in good shape, so I decided to call a local body shop that I normally deal with. they are capable of getting me an aftermarket sport hood with the hood scoop that is supposed to be a replacement for the stock hood. I am wondering if anyone has experience with these aftermarket hoods. I am hoping that it is exactly the same as the stock one. not only will this one be new and not have damage but its only 30 dollars more, 330$ canadian which is works out to be $286 american.

Does anyone have one of these hoods? If so how does it look?

    Thanks

I do not have any experience with the specific hood you are talking about, but I do have experience with aftermarket parts in general. I will always use factory parts, even if it requires going to the junk yard.

Aftermarket parts generally are made of inferior steel. The gauge of sheet metal may be thinner, the bracing may be different and weaker, and its composition may be different than factory. Aftermarket parts are much more difficult to align as their tolerances are worse. Alot of aftermarket parts come without seam sealer. I would not expect the E-Coat to be of equal quality to the factory parts. Finally, aftermarket parts often come with more dents and waves than factory parts. Although I have seen plenty of new factory parts come in with damage.

Your decision must be based on how badly damaged the factory hood is, as well as your tolerance for a part that may dent and corrode more easily, and not align perfectly.

The factory OEM replacement hood does not come seam sealed.

    Hey Nad,

I too am a fellow Canucker,
And would love to know where I can get a sport hood for 330$.
Any way you could find out from your body shop where they sourced it from?
I'm getting rediculous quotes out here of 1000$ plus.

    What area are you in?
Would help me out bigtime brother,

Here is the back corner of my sport hood, you can see the blob of extra seam sealer.

Here is the side of my hood, the seam sealer is difficult to see, but you will know where to go look on your hood.

Here is great picture of the seam sealer on my front door.

Nad the seam sealer isn't the biggest factor in your decision; you wouldn't have even noticed it wasn't there (and maybe the aftermarket hood does come with it, it all depends). The biggest factor I believe will be how the hood aligns with your vehicle (gaps), how it shuts, and any waves in the body panel.

I would be very surprised if the factory replacement hood does not have seam sealer, considering they do brand new, but I will take your word for it. I have never replaced a tacoma hood.

I got an aftermarket replacement last week for mine. It fits like stock. Just had to swap over the factory rubber stops and adjust. Here's the closest pic I have.
