I should of clarified no additional shims were installed reused factory ones. Everything was in spec the grease test had a beautiful pattern to it. It was done by a local member who is a wrench ninja he did it to his truck first...after being in it an romped on I knew I was in good hands.

Yeah well mine already had 60k miles on it when the locker went in and I knew it was gonna get romped on so I tightened it up a bit.
But I paid $100 in shims. Ouch!

I love it but took some work, cuz I'm cheap!

My truck is a TRD off-road but the rear axle gave up the ghost and the rear factory locker on second gens sucks anyway.

I got the front diff and rear axle from a gen 2 4banger with 4.10 gears. Threw in the locker and then installed everything in my truck.

I didn't wanna go with the ARB because of stupid air lines and a compressor that's useless for airing up tires or running tools.

is the yellow wire mod basically he same as a-trac?

To your top comment, my ARB compressor is fine for airing up and down. I don't have lockers yet and use the compressor frequently.

The yellow wire mod allows the truck to activate auto LSD in 4 low. For some reason, Toyota didn't think we needed that. ATRAC is like A-LSD on steroids because of the different brake booster on the OR model.

I have no patience so I have a CO2 bottle for airing up and running tools. Don't like permanently installing more stuff than i absolutely need which is also why I love my Harrop locker. Just 2 wires to the diff and a relay, using the stock locker switch

Not even close.... a-trac found on the 09+ TRD OR 4x4's is due to the completely different master cylinder / brake booster /abs unit. On those trucks its all in one unit, a 4 channel abs unit / master cylinder that is electrically boosted, capable of 2x the line pressure at any given pedal pressure and WAY higher operating frequency. Needless to say it is able to react to wheel speed way quicker and control it much faster. Also WAY less squishy pedal feel like on the rest of the trucks without that master cylinder.

Thanks, no worries. I still need to wrap my head around the different drive modes.

Years ago it was so much easier to understand and consequently utilize effectively. I had a Samurai that I installed a mechanical LSD. Worked awesome both on and off road. Completely seamless/transparent and I could go places in 2wd that others had difficulty in 4wd.....

Can someone explain the benefit(s) of Toyota's drive modes over a mechanical LSD or Locker? And what are the down sides?

An open diff is most resistant to abuse and requires the least amount of engineering and maintenance and is also the cheapest.

I wonder what it would take to retrofit that. My 07 off-road didn't come with that.

Probably the entire front body harness

Not even worth it, entirely different ECU to control the abs / master cylinder

By ECU you mean skid control ECU (and not the ECM above the glove box), right? They are separate control modules in every Tacoma

Cuz that's one assembly with the ABS pump so then it should just be the booster and the front body harness (which is a bitch and a half to swap tho)
