Hey LT, I did the same thing when I got back! Ended up buying a TRD Sport and then added stuff like a 3" leveling kit/lift some 285's and all. The sport is off road enough to allow for trips to the deer lease, or rock climbing, yet comfortable enough for trips back and forth to my base. Another reason I got the Sport was that I wanted 4DR and long bed, which I wasn't able to get in an OffRoad version. Be safe out there.

WHy are the TRD Off Road models harder to come by? is it truly due to the fact that they are more sought out for?

Nationally , Toyota sells more Sports than Offroads , so it makes sense from the dealer's perspective to supply what customers are demanding .

Hmmm... if they sold more Sports, then why are they out of Off Roads? LOL

If they are selling more Sports (which have almost the same price tag as an Off Road), then I would bet the profit margin is why they are pushing them... afterall, the Sport has LESS mechanical engineering/ drivetrain parts... so it is cheaper to make. The fake air scoop is so loved, Toyota was genius for sticking it on the hood of the Sport to help sell the thing!

If traction control/ A-TRAC doesn't work, then why do the guys who have Sports do the yellow wire mod (4-Lo trac mod) so they can have TRAC in low range and then rave about it???

Why does a Toyota provided feature found only on the Off Roads (A-TRAC) bug some of you who don't have it (yet)? Don't bother responding... it will just turn into name calling most likely... emotion replaces logic when one runs out of facts in a debate.

The Tacoma (any Tacoma, including Sport) is a great truck... with the Off Road package it is even better IF you want to use your truck off the highway, off the road, and have the most traction possible from the factory.

The 4WD Sport has nothing extra for traction/ off road drivability in low range... The Off Road has a locking rear differential and A-TRAC for front and rear locker-like traction. In high range 4WD the Sport and the Off Road are similar... only that the Off Road has the hydraulic brake booster which possibly enhances TRAC performance in H4.

    Have a nice day! ;)

Does that hurt your feelings or something ?

And we all know the differences between the two TRD models .

No, not at all... you guys all misunderstand me and my passion for the Off Road. There is no hate for the Sport... I just didn't like the hood scoop... being fake and being in the line of sight over the hood when doing steep off roading. I find that in person, some Sport owners I wheeled with were impressed with the A-TRAC and didn't realize the advantage it provided... Education is the key... and not depending on the salesman to provide all that is important to know.

    Me :

Nationally they sell more Sports than Offroads

    You :

The Sport has no locker !

You have to do the yellow wire mod !

The Sport has a fake hoodscoop !

Why does it bother you that you don't have Atrac ?

You must be street racers !

The dealer misled you and you didn't realize you bought the wrong truck !

My '97 just failed its frame inspection and I'm looking at getting a 2nd gen :D. I just read this entire thread and think that the OR best suits my needs. I'v begun to search for for my ideal truck and came across this one : http://www.realautoshtx.com/vehicles/2006-toyota-tacoma--18?contacted=true#contact-form !!!

I Love the look of it!!! the price is doable, but i'm confused. what model is this?!

It has the long bed so I first thought it was a Sport, but then I noticed no hood scoop. I also see that it has chrome rear bumpers and Off Road badging. Could this be the ONLY OR LB in existence?

I contacted the dealer and I'm waiting for their response but I wanted to run it by you all first..Thanks!!!
