I just saw a video yesterday on youtube from a channel named "taco bandit" guy has a 4x4 OR Access cab and his buddy has a 4x4 Sport DCLB and they both went off roading to show the differences/similarities. Bottom line is they were both capable, however the OR was just able to get over obstacles a little faster. Go check it out

Atrac and crawl control are pretty similar. Crawl control just let's you select the speed your truck will go off-road. "Crawl"="atrac" "control"="cruise control". The larger brake boosters are to operate these systems and they are much better off-road than a typical traction control system.

That's not true, ATRAC makes a world of difference.

True, I didn't even think about ATRAC, I use mine all the time.

Honestly, I thought it was a gimmick but it's seriously impressed me a few times.

We went to Barnwell Mountain a few weeks ago and it was rainy. I was in my OR and there was a 3rd Gen in a Sport behind me (it was Red). I was completely stock, including the Adventure tires. He had a small lift and maybe BFGs but that was it as far as I know. It's not 100% stock, but not really modified.

He kept up just fine. I don't know if he slipped any, but with MTS set to rock and my locker on only when I thought I'd need it (maybe 2 or 3 times the whole weekend honestly), I never had a single instance where even on the 3/5 star trail I had any difficultly. That said, I don't think he struggled either.

The sports are quite capable. I just wanted the OR features cause I had the disposable income and didn't want to leave it on the table. But I'd have no reservation of rocking an 4x4 Sport stock, and when you get stuck, it's a good excuse for a regear and lockers :). Then you're locked AND have fake hood scoop, which I personally like regardless of the non-functionality.

I also watched that video and you are correct that both did the same. Also one thing you can get is a max Trac for when or if you need extra traction to get out of tough spots.

Is the 4WD system the same on the limited as on the sport?

Yep. Other than the computer goodies on the OR, it's the same on it as well. 2H > 4H > 4L. Same reduction gears on transfer case.

Awesome, thought you were driving a 3rd gen.
I do have to say that the Crawl Control works pretty damn good.

Also, can someone explain to me (in Layman's terms) the traction control button up by my sunglass holder, and apparently it does something else when I would go to 4Low? I forget the abbreviation, but have seen it mentioned throughout with no explanation. I know traction control will slow the wheels down to not allow slip, but what's the other function and how (why?!) would I want to turn it off/on?

Thanks y'all - this thread has been very helpful for me gaining knowledge about off-roading a Tacoma (this is my first one!)

    all tore up already
ive wheeled my sport a good number of times. never once did i think i needed an OR to get through. but i have a better trick than most OR out there because my sport has a 3rd pedal. id say thats more important than crawl control and an inclinometer and matte black flares(locker would be cool but havent found a NEED for one yet). actually i scratched up a flare pretty hard last year. got out the compound and an hour later it looked new. GL doing that to a textured plastic flare!
