No shame in using your OR in mall parking lots

Thats what they all do. Even with their RTT and fake world expedition builds...

Most of these guys couldn't even tell you the name of the state next to them or pass Geography 101. Only expedition they are doing is a Walmart parking lot

As an offroader, I find a locker significantly more important than a suspension lift. You will find ruts and holes that will always exceed the suspension travel even in mild cases. I've been on fire access roads that were a huge pain.

To me a locker is a must even for "mild" offroad.

First modifications I make to any vehicle is recovery equipment, gears and lockers, then everything else.

If we're talking the ride of the truck, I'll say this much: I have a 3rd gen TRD Sport, and the ride is extremely stiff, and on a bumpy road can be downright jarring. My friend has a 2nd gen (2015) TRD Off Road, the ride is much smoother. Now, it doesn't help that my previous vehicle was a 2010 4Runner, which was a luxury vehicle compared to any generation Tacoma. But assuming the 3rd gen TRD off road is the same as the 2nd gen, I can say the ride is much smoother than the sport.

You get the Rear Locker and ATRAC in place of crawl control on the OR.

The OR and Sport were like $500 off so it was a no brainer to get a better OR tires and 4x4 tech.

They both feel the same when I drove them, and I get out into the sticks twice a month or more depending on how much OT I get at work.

Just want to add that a guy at work bought a sport for the same price as my OR with the same exact tech package and did not even know he had a plug in the bed or that the rear seats can fold down. I felt like I solved world hunger when I showed him these things.

I waited with hopes of the double cab. So glad I did.
Lockers are usually scary in the snow. The lsd is much better.

This. I've started mingling with some off road clubs locally (not a Tacoma amongst them) and geography skills and actual real world off roading are pretty damn low.

    Like, so many.
I've actually owned both the third gen Sport and OR. I off roaded with the Sport. I did pull the air dam and put AT tires on it. The truck did just fine. It's a very capable vehicle. That being said, the mods I was doing to it were to make it more like an OR.
I love the look of the Sport. It definitely handles better, but it's a more jarring ride as well. And the suspension isn't really suited for off roading. It'll work, it's just not at home there.
I'm really surprised these models are the same price since the OR has so many more features. The Sport really should have a functional scoop or dual exhaust or something else to set it apart.

It's mixed here in the PNW, at least from what I see around. From the dealership I purchased my sport, they had almost 50/50. My neighbor got the OR short bed and drove it. Drove really nice! He said he doesn't off-road but it was nice to know it was off-road.
I ended up getting the sport due the price they gave me and needed a long bed (I know OR now has a long bed but off-road with a long bed might be an issue). Dealer didn't have OR LB in stock anyways and pricing was a bit higher for some reason. As much as I would have gone with an OR, I know I don't go off-road and I believe sport can handle my seasonal fishing/camping trip just fine.

I think both trucks are great base on your needs. Also, leaving mines fully stocked.

There both basically the same, all the or has that the sport doesn't is skid plates, locking rear differential, and slightly better shocks. I take my sport off roading with HIGHWAY TIRES and it still keeps up with my friends f-150 fx4 off road.

Only difference is the off-road has crawl control, locking rear differential, all terrain tires, and a front skid plate.
