It would be different if you talked about something other than non functional hood scoops and color matched bumpers... Oh, and ATRAC!!! Glad to see I'm not the only one who gets tired of seeing the same SPORT bashing comments from you ALL THE F'n time!!

Judging by the number of post in Failed rear end thread on TTORA its not prooving itself very well.
People forgot that this rear end was for 1gen truck which was lighter, narrower, had smaller springs.
Bigger is always better. Because bigger is stronger. Thats why LC had 9.5 rear end.
8.4 is visible bigger, thicker, with more contact between Ring& pinion

Grab a beer and chill a bit my friend... While I do admit I am pretty excited that the A-TRAC turns my truck into a 'tractor', I have posted many other subjects here and have shared lots of my Baja and desert photos as well... I have even invited any of you TWers to join me on a big Baja off road adventure. One of you accepted (HB Murphy) and I think he had a good time...

I also go wheeling with Sport owners, and they are all good people who either like the looks of the scoop or didn't know about the hydraulic brake booster or A-TRAC for improved traction. They all still can do pretty much the same stuff I can, and if not, that's okay. This is a forum for talking or BSing with each other about our trucks... Read what you like, ignore what you don't... Debate if you want, but be prepared for another point-of-view and accept that.

Sorry about the hood scoop thing, but if you already knew it was for looks only, before you bought a Sport, then consider my posts information to those who think it has some kind of mechanical function before they spend good money for 'window dressing'. I personally think good money should go into a truck that can out-perform others and has more funtional equipment. But, that is just what I think... don't worry too much about what I think... worry about having a good time with your Tacoma!

Its actually very simple, find TRD R&P and Non-TRD R&P and hold them against each other. Difference is big. (I think somebody here even posted pic) The truth is TRD rear blows and Toyota should have went with 9.5 TRD instead being cheap and go with R&P designed for trucks half of its weight, and power. Of course people can wheel them but they have to remember that from time to time they going need AAA to get back home.:D

Your friends 84 does not run stock gears, nor has V6 to power that thing up, also does not have axles as wide as you have. Apples to oranges.
LC is the same weight, width and power (inline 6 4.5L ) what 2Gen is and it got 9.5 for e-locker to make sure that it LASTS and can take a beating.
Also Your friend truck travels on the flatbed with non-stock gears.

Again if you want something to last, you build bigger.
Also my buddies TRD rear blowed up on the highway on our way to his first offroad run. He was not locking nothing it simply blew on flat road  Talking about POS diff.

Yea.. I spend a lot of time with my neighbor putting his jeep back together.. but not any of the factory parts (the few left). Ya mod it.. it's gunna break. That goes for any car/truck

It has its known problems.. but the american toyotas do too. I would love to have a jeep. But not a reasonable style to have as my DD and stuff.. yea, I like my tacoma, but If I was going from alaska to chile.. I wouldn't probably choose it. No matter what way you shake it.. its a road ready IFS. If you're talking serious trail blazing.

Actually I'd probably still take a series rover. Probably biased.. But it can be stripped down to the chassis without a jack. Even change axels without taking off a tire. I don't think I ever put a jack under a rover cept to change a tire. Unreliable .. meh? Not if kept up, only need 2 or 3 wrenches to get it to pieces. carry a couple axles and a change of hubs and bearings and you'll never stop.

Ya, the Off Road is way better! :p;)

Of course the roads my Tacoma is built for are unpaved or non-existant! If you want good road quality, get a sports car... The Tacoma is a TRUCK! (it is the most comfotable truck I have ever been in, however)

I would love to have you be in my truck when the A-TRAC is in action... there is nothing like the feel of a 'tractor-beam' grabbing your truck and pulling it through a bog/ sand pit, or out of a high center stuck on a deeply rutted road... with only one tire (front right) having solid contact with the ground!

Even a rear locker does no good if the back end is resting on the trailer hitch and spare tire... facing uphill... and the front left tire is also in a rut. I thought we were going to have to dig and push! Well, in L4, A-TRAC on... gave it the gas... and the truck pulled it self out and up the hill. Amazing.

Okay, back to your regular programming!

A-TRAC must be nice...it just doesn't seem possible that only 1 tire can pull the whole truck through...but you guys, and that Tundra vid, prove it can.

Sport for the long bed, and with the lift I changed the suspension anyway. Sport all the way if money is no object.

I live in Florida and I had a 05 TRD 4X4 Sport and just traded it with 97k on it for a 2011 TRD Sport 4X4. Did I use the 4X4? Not much when up north a few times with the 05 in snow pulled a Mazda Protege on a dolley behind me and went up a long steep hill with about 3 inches of snow and ice on road the taco went right up it no problem, the only problem was I had to change my britches when I got up the hill.:) The 2011 I got another 4X4 im from the old school days, If you drive a truck and I'm not saying this to draw shots and make enemies, when I was in school if you drove a Truck that was set up like a 4X4 it needs to be a 4X4. These TAco's that are set up to look like a 4X4 really kills me, it's really funny.
Hey whatever float anothers Boat. For the money wouldn't have anything less than a 4X4. I just Sold one that had 97K for 14.5K Daddy Likes

I have an 07 Jeep that I've had for four years, it has never been in the shop save for computer upgrades and such. My five year old Tacoma has not been there either. Neither has let me down once. My Rubi has been all over offroading, and the short wheelbase is better in most situations I take it through. The Tacoma is more powerful, comfortable (the Jeep is not uncomfortable, just different), and roomier, and the ride is better but I can't say either is a better vehicle. Apples to oranges. I'd have a hard time deciding if I could only keep one.
