Dealers sadly don't all know everything they should... Instead of the dealer's web site, go to Toyota.com

The SPORT (and Off Road) does have the traction and safety features of the STAR System (TRAC, AUTO LSD, VSC).

In addition to the above, the OFF ROAD TRD has the locking rear differential (and the A-TRAC system if 4WD TRD OFF ROAD).

If you got the SPORT, then no locker... but the AUTO LSD will help with it's 'posi-traction-like' limited slip function.

You see that is my point about education with the traction controls on the Off Road TRDs... Driving skill is the best method, yes... However, if you bought the Off Road instead of the Sport you wouldn't need to pay additional money for non-Toyota equipment like a front locker... The LSD system in an Off Road is much stronger than in the Sport because the Off Roads have a stronger Hydraulic Brake Booster as needed for the A-TRAC system. Other Tacomas have the standard Vacuum Break Booster.

A-TRAC AND a REAR LOCKER are on '09 and newer Tacomas (Off Road TRDs)... I haven't needed a rear locker since A-TRAC was added to the Tacos... IT works so well... and glides over obsticles without fear of getting stuck!

I was seeing the 'pre-'09' part of your post and wondered if you knew the rear locker is still on the new trucks... (along with the A-TRAC).

    Have a great day!:D

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
My approach was quite opposite. I think Sport/Sr5 version is better for those that are heavy into mechanical modification.
You get real axle (8.4 ) on the rear and can get pretty much any gear/ locker combo you like.
No VSC, No ATRAC, No the rest of the crap that will prevent you from replacing vital parts o nthe truck (like transfer case) . I mean you can convert that thing to AWD and computer still will not care. :)
The truth is this truck screams SFA and Tundra 9.5 rear :D Also I want shifter for transfer case because that knob is going to drive me crazy.

While I definitely would enjoy and could use the off-road's locker when I go wheeling, I simply love my sport; It handles amazing and looks beautiful (I know looks don't matter...) Also, after I've taken this truck where a 2WD shouldn't be, I'm confident my sport has the capability needed for my adventures. To me, if you have one or the other, you're very well set. I can't decide, I love all Tacoma's- 2WD S/OR, or 4WD S/OR.

It's fun to go hard places in a 2wd, as long as there is 4x4 backup :D

I say a TX Pro TRD, then find someone to swap you for a sport hood and bumper, then black out the rest of the chrome. Now that would be a good looking functional truck.

And TRD exhaust system and I think, don't quote me, but slightly upgraded suspension(only worth it if your not going to upgrade).

Hey I like the wheels(until they tear the ring up putting new tires on it), I want the exhaust... so your really only paying like $500 for the fancy sticker. ;)

I got the sport simply b/c I liked the way it looked (I'm not scared to say it). I get compliments daily on it. I got the 4x4 b/c I frickin wanted a 4x4. I think they made the hood scoop non-functional b/c some of you crazy-asses would definitely get water sucked into it, if it were real. :D

I looked at the stickers.. thought about the fact I'd be registering it for on road use. Never needed any special package to get anywhere before. If you're an off roader for fun, then go with the base and build it right. Or just go smart and buy a jeep or something more off road oriented.

Take it from a former Jeep owner (me)... the Toyota will keep running and running while the Jeep will be in the shop or your garage. We buy Toyotas now because of QUALITY of product. We do go off road (off highway) a lot, and the OFF ROAD TRD is made to go anywhere we want from the showroom floor... NO MODS NEEDED, thank you very much Toyota.

Buying a Jeep is NOT a smart thing... unless you can afford it and it isn't your only vehicle... Jeeps are cool, I still like 'em (as a vehicle style)... but won't own one again!

    Good for you ?

I don't understand why you quoted me as what you said had nothing to do with what I said .

The jist of my comment was that not all Tacoma owners get their truck with offroading as their primary purpose for purchase . Some of us find the Sport package a better suit to our needs for a quality pick up truck that may see limited or no offroad use at all .

Whether YOU get the TRD Offroad package or build up the SR5 package for offroading , has nothing to do with what I was saying .

FWIW , I think all of the Tacomas are great vehicles , but not all owners have the same needs or reasons for buying theirs .
