I like the video of the guy driving the accord thru the brook with all the Tacoma's and the one ford that started to die after going thru. point is, you have to go pretty extreme to need the difference between the off road and the sport. personally, I like the color matching on the sport. The scoop looks good and I like 17" rims. I don't need a locker for what I do. I mainly use it to get me around nicely in the winter months. If I want to go off road, then I can just fine with 4wd and trac. Those of you who go to the edge should get the locker and atrac, a little stiffer ride from stock but that seems to change soon after purchase anyway.

One must assume to know the differences of have driven both in order to vote logically, yes?

A better way to ask the question might be...

    Which 4WD do you prefer:

Sporty looks (color matched trim, fake hood scoop) (SPORT TRD)

    OR

Off Road Capability (A-TRAC all wheel traction control, locking rear differential, hydraulic brake booster for enahnced limited slip power) (OFF ROAD TRD)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even if you are getting just a 2WD, it still has a locking differential which does more than AUTO LSD in tough situations.

Many who bought the Sport (cause it looks cool) have no idea there is so much difference in what the Off Road offers. If you spend extra dollars over an SR-5 or base Tacoma, wouldn't you want the bucks to go to things that increase the truck's abilities instead of just making it look a certain way?

If you don't go off pavement or just need 4WD for snowy roads or light duty off roading... and don't want to spend $$$ for after market lockers, and like the Sport look... GREAT... That's why Toyota made it in 2005!

I want my truck to go as far into the unkown as possible, and the traction abilities of the Off Road allow me to with comfort of knowing it will crawl over or through anything I need it to! ;)

Got the SR5 because I'm cheap and figured I'd add my own stuff later. But given that I have to choose one or the other I went with Sport because I needed and bought a longbed.

I like the color matched stuff on the sport. Not a fan of the scoop...just not my cup of tea. I went with the offroad cause of the locker. Just changed out all that ugly chrome and I was set!

Because Longbeds are not Off Roads, that choice doesn't apply to this thread question.

Have you seen what my short bed bumper got snagged on in Baja...? A long bed would be hung up on the crazy gullies were were crossing... No long bed Off Road...

But you have a weaker rear end. Not that it makes a HUGE difference but if I had to choose between the two I would get a sport and put ARBs in it. Is a sport cheaper than an offroad? If so, then I dont see how this isnt the best option.

    SHORT BED?:

When I went from my '01 Tacoma xtra cab's 6 ft. bed to my '05 Tacoma double cab 5 ft. bed, I was sure I would need that bed extender that rides on the tailgate. However, the '05 (second gen.) has a deeper/ wider bed and I could easily get all my gear that took up my '01 6 ft. bed into the '05 5 ft. bed. Also, I now have a full size rear seat (they fold down flat, too) where I can put things that I want to keep indoors as well as more people.

As for the 8" diff., well after 260,000 miles between my three Tacomas, this has never failed (yet)!

How about just go into 4WD before getting stuck happens? But, if 4WD-HI-TRAC does get stuck>>A-TRAC>>Still Stuck (hasn't happened to me)>>Rear Locker+A-TRAC.
