I followed the old adage of “it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it” so I chose the off-road. Also I preferred the softer ride, no fake scoop, no spoiler, and black fender flares over painted. In the end both are capable trucks off-road, the only person you have to please is yourself so buy what makes you happy.

    Cool.

Sometimes you need it. Sometimes you don't.

I live miles away from any real roads. It can be up to a week before the plows make it after a storm. I need 4x4 for this snow. Not everyone has that sort of situation.

My wife got tired of needing to snowmobile to work in the middle of the night.

Was this a Fake Noob Friday Thread or a legitimate question?
This topic has been hashed out continually since the first 3rd gens shipped.
Anyone asking this with a straight face hasn't done any research. Zero.

Well, not exactly, the Limited cannot be had with a manual transmission, while the Sport can be had with the fancier leather interior as an option. From my perspective at least, the TRD Sport > Limited.

OR Owners: Hate the fake hood scoop

Also OR Owners: Any sport owners want to swap hoods for $600?

Most of them have no problem running fake bead-locks though...

Also true. The fact there is such a thing as the 2x4 version of the Off Road should tell you everything you need to know about trim packages.

He’s talking about the superior aesthetics of having crawlz control knobs above your mirror.

its not a “fake” hood scoop. It exists and is actually a scoop. Scoop by definition is just a utensil resembling a spoon. Now if you said it’s a non functional hood scoop, in the same breath as a cowel induction hood scoop, then yes, it serves no purpose other than aesthetics. Ymmv

all OEM Toyota suspension sucks, including the Fox 2.5 in the Pro. Most Pro owners end up swapping their stock suspension, for something better, which should tell you everything.

I've been a Tacoma lurker for 4+ years and finally pulled the trigger. As "cool" as the fake scoop looks, from the driver's seat, it was a distraction for something that brings no value and thus went with the OR. That said, I'll probably drive to the mall more than I will put it in 4 Low Crawl, but yea, I'm Off Road. :)

Well after of over 50 of them owning 4wd toyota's, you pretty much know what your going to need. I try not to drive in areas you need a snowmobile for starters. I guess it can depend where you live as for snow amounts. My sr5 does perfectly fine in the snow we get here, and that could be up to 18'', sometime' more a storm.

It does exist however it does not "scoop" air so while "real" in the physical sense it is a fake hood scoop

Less about getting through the snow and more about getting unstuck. If I get stuck it's going to be a long walk home to find someone to come help me get out. No one's coming by and there's no phone signal. 4x4 and a locker is that bit of insurance for me. I want options. If I lived in the city I wouldn't be too concerned about it. That's why I had a 2wd truck before I moved out here.

Horses for courses. I understand not everyone has the same situation as me.

I have a Sport. Only bummer (IMO) is that the ABS valving for the sport is at the passenger side fire wall. OR and Pro do bot have the valving there b/c crawl control so OR and Pro owners can mount a second battery there.

I would have bought the sport regardless b/c it was the only 4x4 on the lot. Added bonus: sport has the scoop which is good for a perceived 80 hp and 100 ft lbs of torque, and makes the panties drop.

I had an'07 Sport MT, it blew up on me a year ago and I needed a truck in a hurry so ended up with a '21 OR AT. I use the truck for work in the bush and having a rental for 6 weeks while waiting on the OR AT was bad, six to eight months for a MT was never going to work.

The locker and crawl control features work and work surprisingly well and are damn handy on the auto because low speed pedal modulation sucks. I think the scenarios where I have needed the locker and crawl control (slushy snow on ice and I didn't feel like chaining up for one short hill or deep Spring breakup sloppy mud) I could have gotten out of with the power control a far left pedal offers.

Either way, if you are going to be off road any amount of time, the suspension will be changed and chances are front and rear bumpers will be swapped out as well.

If all you are doing is driving forestry roads, save some money because 4 wheel drive at that point is only to save you some rear wheel spin to extend tire life.
