Howdy, all. I'm headed to the dealership with 2 weeks left on my 3 year/36,000 mile warranty in hopes of getting my bubbling, chipping, corroding--whatever the hell they're doing-- wheels replaced.

What are everyone's experiences with the dealers lately? I've searched the forum and found some responses but none lately. From what I've gathered it's a known issue and shouldn't be a problem replacing/refinishing the wheels, right?

I hope they replace the wheels so I'm not without my Taco for a long time! Also, anyone who has had their wheels replaced--did you try to talk the dealer into giving you the old ones? Did it work?

Also, while I'm at it, anything else I should have them check while it's in the shop for warranty work? It's a 2011 Double Cab Sport Short Bed TRD Sport (auto) with 29,000 miles.

    Thanks in advance!

Yes....I had 3 of mine replaced back when I was still under warranty.

I went to my dealer, showed him the wheels....and they didn't give me any grief. Told me to come back when the wheels were in stock....
Granted, that was probably 4 years ago.

Good Luck with your dealer. Let them know how UPSET you are with the quality.

I'm trying to imagine what or how bad subject wheels may be. Anyone have pics of wheels that have been replaced?

    Thanks for the pics guys.

It's the first I've heard of it and the link posted by OZ (great search find BTW) is over two years old...about the time I sign up on TW.

Do you guys wash and apply wax on your rims to protect them? Granted i have seen many oem tacoma rims here in the northeast look like crap probably due to lack of care. i have had many vehicles and i keep them waxed including rims oem or aftermarket and here in the NE we have severe weather conditions and a little preventive care goes a long way. Just saying keep em clean and apply wax, maybe that helps but maybe not

I've only owned my Taco for 2 months, but yes I keep things clean and waxed on all my vehicles.

UPDATE - well, so far, so good. The dealer looked at the wheels and said it appears to be a warrantable condition, but he had to email someone at Toyota a picture of the wheels to be sure. They are supposed to call me tomorrow or Wednesday and let me know!

While I was there, I had them check the HVAC blower and they replaced it for me no questions asked. Is there anything else I should be making sure gets done before my warranty is up? The only other thing I know that has been done to it is the TSB leaf springs have been replaced.

FINALLY - they are refinishing all 4 wheels under warranty on Monday! Giving me a loaner vehicle as well. Will post some pics when it's done!

Well they refinished the rims but not the same as the factory finish. Pretty disappointed actually. They just painted the entire rim and didn't even take them off the truck when they did it. Gonna paint them black soon.

I have seen that condition a 1000 times or more . Corrosion has set in under the clear coat . If not cleaned and removed correctly it will be back soon !

Mine looked like crap spent hours cleaning and sanding, then plasti-dipped them. They're good so far (a few months). If you don't get the corrosion off it will continue to work under the paint, then flake off. You might want to question the dealer on what exactly they did, get it in writing if possible.
    Good luck.

I had mine replaced once under warranty and now I have repainted my replacement set.

For my next new vehicle from any manufacturer I will use clear plastidip (or coloured) before winter driving

Wow, I'm super glad my US (6 spd V6 4.0L DCSB 2010) SR5 comes with the factory steel wheels. I just paint them with Tremclad BBQ high temp paint every spring after washing. :D You guys have educated me! Thanks!

    Life is good...

    cheers,
