TRD/SR5 seat fabric wear?

    Hey all,

I have a 2008 DC SR5 TRD prerunner with the standard cloth sport seats. The truck has about 6500 miles on it since new. The truck was purchased new from my local dealer in August. Very gentle usage, in my opinion. The driver's side seat bolsters both bottom and the side are showing what I would say is very noticable wear, with threads pulling loose from the weave of the seat material. I see a couple of spots on the PS seat doing the same thing, on the bottom. That seat has been sat on about 10 times total since new. I'm wondering if this is a known problem with the 08 trucks like mine, and what the dealer network has been doing for folks with this problem.

Thanks in advance for your help.

My 2008 is showing some wear in the seat. I have the base model (no SR5 and no TRD) so I think my seats are even cheaper than yours. If you look at it it doesn't necessarily look like a lot, but considering the truck is only 10 months old it IS a lot of wear.

I have the base model seats ie. cheap cloth and I have no signs of wear on my 07 that I have had for 14 months and 15k miles :D love my Wet Okole seat covers that I installed last June, so 9 months unprotected and they still looked new.

How about some pics, so we can see how bad it is.

I've noticed that they seem to stain very easily. My seat covers should be here by Christmas though.

Bring it to the dealer, you are still within warranty and at least get it documented on the VIN. Agree no seat should breakdown, I covered mine with Wet Okoles since my interior was light & have a dog, but any cover would be an improvement.

Toyota hasn't made a decent seat since the old 7-way sport buckets 89-early 95. I absolutely loved those seats. The TRDs are nice too, bummer its happening for you & interested in what toyota says.... keep us posted.

I think that Toyota made them that way so you would have to buy their seat covers. I mean what kind of fabric stains from water?

BTW mine is an 05 PreRunner TRD Sport

I'm noticing alot of wear on my 2005 TRD Sport where the lumbar support wheel rubs against the bottom of the seat when my fat rear compresses it.
Does anyone have any pictures of the TRD seat covers installed? That picture is really hard to tell and the colors look weird..

My friend just got a 4 Runner with SR5 seats "upgraded seat material" and complains that it stains from water.
My cheapo base model seats didn't stain from water, but I got covers cause of a big hairy dog. 9 months of the dog without covers didn't damage my seats though.

I want seat covers for my 09 SR5 but want to keep the seat mounted air bags functional. WHo has these covers available?

All they had were the rubber covers. In Florida you want nothing but cloth.

    Still looking.

Thanks for the replys everybody. Here are a couple of pics. First is the driver's side upper bolster, second is the driver's side lower cushion. The little threads are where the weave is breaking. Anybody else see anything like this?

This is a 2008 which I purchased new, it has 6500 very gentle miles on it. I've never gotten into the seat with anything sharp in my pocket.

Did you talk to the dealer about it?

Have not talked to the dealer yet. I'm right in the middle of moving from one state to another, so will do that as soon as I can. Problem I see coming is even if the dealer replaces the seat covers with new ones, the new one will just do that same thing. At least it seems that way to me.

Yeah all they make is neoprene (wet suits) material covers. I live in Vegas where is gets HOT and my covers don't make it any hotter at all. What is your concern with the neoprene in Florida?

Definitely abrasion of some sort causing this. You're most likely right, new covers would do the same. I sprung for the TRD covers as I was afraid the light gray would stain easily. They fit great and will protect what you're seeing here.

Rubber doesn't breath. With our heat combined with our humidity anything I sit on has to breath.

I prefer cloth to leather, too. Anything but cloth sticks to your legs when you wear shorts in the summer down here. Your dry heat is a whole lot easier to take.

I am a new to this forum but thought I could provide something on this issue.

I have a 2014 Prerunner TRD and the drivers side seat is starting to wear along the outer edge of the cloth seat back. Appears its wearing when I get in and out of the vehicle. I've only had this truck one year and have 61225 miles on the odometer. I contacted the dealer and they agreed to replace the seat "cover" under warranty. They said they could only do a one time replacement. When I asked if the same happens again in a year, they said it's a "one time replacement". I dress in casual business clothing so I would consider this as normal wear?

This was not the cheap model Tacoma, guess I'm on my own if the problem is the same with the same material they chose to use.
