The AT transmission is more then capable of handling the extra HP. With that said most transmission will lag in the low gears when your on the gas. That's not a problem unless you take off aggressive most every time. The reason the transmission is like this is because it is built for smooth shifting. The clutch pack takes its time to engage which creates more heat. So by getting into the gas more often leads to more heat on the clutch pack which will burn up. Unless you are drag racing most days you will not have a problem.

If that's how you like to drive 95% of the time get the valve body upgrade kit. At that point you will have close to a Tundra transmission in a Tacoma.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
    Stock clutch blows!

Or I have a faulty one. It started slipping at about 8k miles. Hasn't been smoked a single time. But it is intermittent. I believe it has a weak pressure plate. Some days it doesn't do it others it does it all the time.

My 2013 had 25k on it with no issues.

At the point the clutch in my 81, that was extremely abused outlasted it. It is still good, has 10-15k or so since I installed it in 2010. I never expected it to last more than a season as a play truck and it kept going.

I took it to Toyota, where they said they could not repeat the issue. Those 2 days were a waste of time. My wife says drive it till it quits and call toyota stranded.

As far as reliability the auto and manual are almost the exact same. 10-15 years ago yes there was a difference. Not with these Transmissions.

I would have to see real numbers. My gut tells me that these days the auto is a good bit more reliable.

I 100 percent am biased for the manual and have all manuals myself. The modern toyota automatic may have less gears than a GM but damn they seem to be very reliable. And they get better MPG to boot.

At the end of the day, I prefer the manual. So even if that ends up costing more.. which is the opposite of years ago. . I will have one!

The last two quarters the auto has been slightly better then the manual. For its 10 year cycle they have been about the exact same. Some quarters the manual has a few less customer issues. I work at AW and see this reports from time to time.

You must be talking about the foreign matter in the clutch disk during manufacturing for the manual. The automatic prone issue is valve body solenoid sticking caused by small cutting chips blocking and jamming the solenoids. Both have about the same occurrence.

All are issues for the manual. The Auto has a lot more then you might think. Machining the case, oil pump, and valve body is not easy at all for the auto. Tolerances get as tight as 50 microns on positions. All the 4x4 Tundra's and Tacoma's auto transmissions are machined and assembled here in Durham, NC in case anybody would like to know.

This. I do not know a manual owner with a Tacoma over 3 years old that has not replaced the throw out bearing. I think there is some confusion here between people saying the manual is weak and the manual is weaker than the auto on the second gens. Honestly, the manual is definitely strong enough to take the SC and mods because people have taken it there and not had issues. However, the automatic transmission was designed for a higher working load off the bat, and I'm sure the long term failure point for the manual will be higher than the automatic in high output applications simply as a result of design loading.

In the end I find people here just defend their positions with the same old tired arguments between manual and auto. Good luck convincing someone they picked the weaker transmission on any level. IMHO pick your poison.

    Yes, I sold my '13 Taco. :'(
    Nope u don't have a faulty one.

Mine started slipping in 6th right before 6k miles, about 3k miles after having the SC installed and about 1k miles after the 2.85 pulley installed. I have a feeling they're right on the limit with only the SC installed.

I didn't even bother getting a new factory clutch, I've had a URD Stage 2 clutch in mine since 6k miles and have never looked back. Engagement is even better... bite point is much earlier in the clutch pedal stroke.

Important point to keep in mind is most people do not drive and manual the right way. I lot o thosef issues come from people not knowing how to shift in a manual. I am basing my info on the quality reports we get in.

"The manual didn't break itself, you need to learn how to shift."

That is definitely a very dealership friendly response, no offense. Please explain to me why I know of people with high end sports coupes, old Dodge diesels, and heavy trucks that shift those just fine and yet have throw out bearing failures fairly early in the Tacoma trucks life. I'd love to hear Toyota's official opinion is that they are too rough on the Tacoma transmission with their shift pattern :D.

This is almost like Toyota's explanation of why WS fluid is better than anything else in the auto, even though it's be proven to basically be a cheap fine dodging fluid.
