Hey guys quick question. I have a trd charger with stock air box assembly. I installed the volant CAI and it killed my MPG. Gadget (URD) set it's because the Volant really messes up the MAF Cal and even adding their MAF Cal Tuner was a roll of the dice.

So my question is, he recommended AFE. Those of you with the AFE Intake, did you notice and change in your MPG? Trying to decide if I'm gonna keep the stock assembly or give it another try with AFE. Chime in quick. Gonna buy today.

I have AFE. I noticed very slight increase in mpg and slight increase in power. No reprogramming just what Toyota does for S/C. I get low 20s in the city and around 24-26 highway at 65. I also drive slow and try and make a game out of the Scan Gauge.

+1 for all of this except I seem to be playing the inverse of this game and see how quickly I can get the Needle between E-F to indicate E because I get like 17-18mpg in the summer and 14-15mpg during the winter on this shite winter gas they force down our throats.

Plus it looks at least 2x better under the hood now.

    Afe stage 2 si

Gadget knows what he's talking about.

And I dont drive slow.... I dont smoke the tires at every light, but I dont drive slow by any means.

For anyone else interested, the Airaid works well with the s/c. My mileage is exactly the same as before the install of either. Airaid was on for exactly 1 trip of roughly 100 miles before s/c install

Get a Scanguage and set one parameter for the TPS. I try to keep the throttle position below 20 in the city and 25 highway.

An easier way to do this with ANY vehicle is to pick an RPM and focus on staying below that. I haven't attempted it yet on the Tacoma because I don't really care but on a car years ago I found that if I kept the RPMs below 1,500 around town and 2,000 on the highway my MPG got dramatically better. It's takes some discipline and like I said, not sure where the sweet spot is on these trucks but you can play around with it. Just know that whatever seems low to you at first probably isn't low enough. You'll accelerate slower than molasses in January but your wallet will start to show the efforts. Experiment with lowering the RPM which you keep it under more and more and as you do this you'll get a better idea what I'm talking about.

Driving by ur boost gauge can help some with heavy feet.

Its very surprising just how much time is spent in vacuum tho, with the blower basically costing a mere 0.5 hp

Running stock and then the afe I seen zero mpg changes......that damn volant causes problems for people both force fed and naturally aspirated. The problem is that its random.. Random as in, not all owners have issues with that intake. Some have the check engine light come on, and others dont.

Many many happy customers running the afe stage 2 si both here and on the xru forum.

I advise installing the afe, then listing that volant for sale in the buy/sell/trade section.

Gadget isn't trying to upsell u on an intake..... He's just being honest. The maf calibrator is only as good as its tuner (u know any good tuners familiar with the r4 programming from split second?)

Odds are things will be easier with the afe.
Shouldn't need any calibration to run well. This may look like it costs more upfront, but it will save u money on buying:
    Maf calibrator
Installation of maf calibrator (time consuming and in a tight spot)
    Tuning costs
Future tuning when u make other hardware changes
Less items to cause problems (faulty wiring/poor soldering/etc)

On any grade I try to stay above 1500.

Remember, the rotors generally make a lot of racket around 1500-1800 under load NORMALLY. While this may be normal and expected, I do not like it and will not accept it as being safe. I'll always downshift if going up an incline. Even if I KNOW I can chug along at 1500 rpm easily, I'll never do it under load. It just sounds terrible to have any metal/metal clanking going on and I won't do it. Its bad enough hearing that noise when u shut the engine off, but I'm not sure how to help that sadly....... I do cringe sometimes.

I used to until a TRD tech told me it was normal. I still kinda get worried when I hear the S/C rattle. But I figure TRD knows what they are doing. I have read guys doing 200 thousand + before a rebuild on the S/C. I personally think its a well built S/C. I still wonder; I try to think of it as proper gear alignment like a ring a pinion. I might have just jinxed mine. It will probably grenade tomorrow.
