Originally not Expo AF! Kinda Expo AF now...lame.
I towed with my 2nd Gen Tacoma and this 3rd Gen. You don't have to floor it, you just downshift. Had to do that in my 2nd Gen 2011 4.0L Sport also. However, the 3rd Gens have the ECT Power button, which changes the shift patterns to keep the gears in the powerband, in fact...it works better than my 2nd gen.

I bought a Silverado because I wanted more power too. And more payload, and weight. It delivered those, all of them. It also delivered a bulkier truck that felt sluggish still due to GM Torque Management software, and it also delivered a failed Torque Converter at 69,000 miles. My friend's 2011 Cruise had his transmission fail at 80,000 miles (out of warranty due to being 5.5 years old, $3000 for transaxle rebuild.

I got more power, and I used it while I had a travel trailer. I also repaired oil pans, fuel sensors, spark plugs, torque converters, door handles (seriously...replaced 5 of them on a vehicle with 4 doors....).

In the end, the Tacoma does fine and I will own a smaller travel trailer next time, the point of my camping was to spend time outside anyways, no in a giant room. Obviously your situation is different, just my thoughts since I did exactly what you are debating.

Most OEM turbo applications with a BOV dont vent to air but rather back into the intake track as letting the air out (especially map based) messes with the A/F ratios. Plus turbos in OEM, especially for a truck, wouldnt be peak RPM monsters but properly sized to provide low end response, either via variable vane, undersized wheels, or dual turbo/inlet application. Usually the turbos making power on the top end are from tuners ripping out the factory units and replacing them with over-sized (and laggy) wheels.

Not saying that S/C is a bad thing, far from it. But turbos offer up quite a bit of flexibility as well and seems to be a popular option with Ford already.

All true, good points. I figured since we were talking about aftermarket applications I would bring up typical issues when going to a turbo. Since we don't have all the flow calculations from the engine to determine proper turbocharger size, intake pipe diameter and length, turbo downpipe size, etc etc etc, i figured it would be much easier to come up with a supercharger.

I totally agree that either a properly sized turbo, or a well designed twin turbo setup, could get rid of most of the 'turbo lag', as well as the disruption altogether in flow caused by BOVs...
However, without proper numbers and lots of tuning, most of us would be left with a truck that makes more power, about 1% of the time when you really let it wind up and get in the turbo's 'power band'. But no benefit to drivability, reliability, or real world power.

I would love a diesel too... I think... if it were the true Hilux then yes.. an american crapped down version no. But mine tows just fine. In-fact I would even would say it tows great. My past truck was a 2015 GMC Canyon, and a 14 Jeep Rubicon before that and this Tacoma kills both when comparing the towing abilities. If the truck's ever searching for a gear I just flip it over into manual and hold the gear I want. I've climbed up some pretty nasty roads towing 2000 plus and it's just kept going. Pretty rocking really. Just my opinion. LOL

Though a 400HP option would be great, I'd say a 335hp option would be more likely. Fingers crossed that this motor surprises, and is able to make close to 350hp on a mild tune and 6lbs of boost :)

Toyota has run turbos in a few trucks over the years, though not as much in North America. Here, it was pretty much limited to the 22R-TE (gas) and the 2L-T (diesel).

Outside of North America most turbo options in the trucks have been diesels (but I'm sure most here know that).

With regard to the 2GR, excluding most hybrid versions, there are really 3 distinct models of the 2GR that can be discussed. What people usually refer to as the "Toyota" 2GR is the 2GR-FE which was used in the Camry, Avalon, Sienna, Highlander, RAV4, and Venza. (Note that this engine was also used in the Lexus ES350 and RX350). What people usually refer to as the "Lexus" 2GR is the 2GR-FSE which was used in the GS350, IS350, and RC350 which is the higher compression, high performing, D-4S (direct and port injected) version of the 2GR. The "Toyota" version is what Lotus used and what they supercharged. Neither of these engines is what is in the Tacoma.

The newer version of the 2GR is called the 2GR-FKS and it is used in both Toyota and Lexus models with various tunes. It is based on the previous 2GR-FSE however with some newer technology. It uses D-4S like the 2GR-FSE used, however the VVT-i actuators are a very different design and allow for much more valve timing control. This allows the use of Atkinson cycle on the fly. Also changed are the exhaust manifolds which are integrated into the cylinder heads (similar to the turbocharged 8AR-FTS). This new engine was first introduced in the 2016 Tacoma, quickly followed by the 2016 Lexus RX350 and then shortly after that in the 2016 Lexus GS350. Following those updates for 2016 model years, the 2017 Sienna and Highlander are now receiving the engine.

The 2GR-FKS is basically mechanically identical between all of these vehicles, however due to different tuning, intake and exhaust, they have relatively different specifications:

    278 hp @ 6000 / 265 ft-lb @ 4600: Tacoma
    295 hp @ 6300 / 268 ft-lb @ 4700: RX350/Sienna/Highlander
    311 hp @ 6600 / 282 ft-lb @ 4800: GS350

In conclusion, while there have been various superchargers for various 2GR engines, most have been used on the 2GR-FE and none that I have seen have been used on the 2GR-FKS. Despite that 2GR similarity there are some very different things going on between these engines.

PS: The updated head design would make it much easier to build a turbo setup for the 2GR-FKS vs. the older designs. Just sayin'.

Excellent post, Jeff. Thanks for sharing your knowledge here.

I would love to know how different the Tacoma cams are relative to the GS350 motor.

I'm all for a turbo option. Swapped an SR20 before SR swaps were cool. Owned 2 ecoboost trucks. However, I feel that Magnuson is the most realistic opportunity for us to get in the game anytime remotely soon. Let's show them the R&D is worth the investment!

335 would be pushing it... not sure if that would be worth it to me unless it was pretty cheap
EDIT: I take what I said back, no way I would pay for that. It better be a hundred horsepower or more or I'm out

All speculation but I could realistically see 100whp gain from the 1320tvs rotor pack at lower boost. The great thing would be the power under the curve from the positive displacement blower. Right where this 3.5 needs it!
