This concept is important for everyone to follow. My wife and I went wheeling up in American Fork Canyon here in Utah and this is our collection of trash we picked up throughout the day. Some of the trails were pretty rough/ difficult so it is not like this is just from campers/ hikersIMG_20160612_174213.jpg !

Me, my family and a few friends went camping last weekend and there was trash and broken glass all over the campsite when we got there, and a big soot pile outside the campfire  beer cans all over the place... It was nasty, but we cleaned it up. You gotta pay it forward for the next generation

I hear ya! On our way to the mineral basin trail head we had to stop and put out two smoldering fires from camp sites right off the side of the road. The previous occupants decided it was a good idea to burn there aluminum cans/ trash.

I'm just going to like this, not that smoldering fires are GOOD for burning cans and all, but that you put it out, haha, like!

Amen. And thanks for paying it forward.

My family owns 100 acres in the Ozarks and Beaver Creek flows though the property (awesome tube creek and great fishing). We have no issues with campers/rafters/tubers coming through...but the amount of trash left behind is staggering. Weekly clean up for me and the boys. At least they know to tread lightly.

I wish more people where I'm from would follow the original post. Last time some of the guys and I went on a couple of trails here, we picked up a shit ton of trash.

I get the tread lightly thing on one hand, like don't litter or burn down forests, or cut down trees. But on the other hand, how you think trails were made in the first place? Someone drove on the grass or dirt or cut down some trees etc.

People even graffitied a WWII Sherman tank on one of our popular trails.

Jon, Do you have any prairie grass down there? :D Got lots of trees, do ya?
Actually, it is a big. Do you know that there are still parts of the Oregon Trail (covered wagon tracks) visible? Once scarred, the land doesn't just snap back.

Not sure what you mean. The prarie is the the far West. I live in the south east and spend time in the north east and south central

But how can we justify any of the trails we drive on then? They all became trails from peephole driving on them.

Not arguing, just curious. Want to learn.

Jon, I was being sarcastic. You ought to know me by now! About your question, though, I was referring to the damage done in SW Texas, never to be made right again, by sheep ranching near the time your ancestors arrived in Texas. Prairie grass will never grow there again, the land eventually completely overcome by scrub brush so dense that neither man nor horse can traverse through it. This from reading, not first hand, as the farthest in that direction I've been was to San Antonio.

Getting stuck while trespassing where I live is an ass-whooping and busted windows...which has been done a couple of times now. My point, don't trespass and tear up other peoples' property.

You've been to South Central. That's the the heart of Texas. The hill country :)
Personally, it is on my opinion that shit happens and we are at the top of the food chain. It's great to conserve nature, but some people get a little crazy. East Texas has a fuck ton of trees, they don't call it the Pine Curtain for no reason

Not saying we should or shouldn't justify any mark we left in the past, but only to acknowledge past incursions on Nature, and avoid further damage. We are all custodians of our delicate planet, and as the only beings able to make a difference, we need to learn to not shit on our dinner table.

I'm a far cry from being a tree hugger, but the rape of planet earth is the big crazy: California's hydraulic gold mining; Oklahoma's frakking; the strip mining of Kentucky as just 3 examples.
