I hear you too. All of us are counting on the cops around us to use the lowest level of force possible to defuse a situation, and unfortunately that isn't always the case.

    I agree 100%

The dogs owners shouldn't have been taunting the LEOs!

The poor dog was placed in that situation because of his dumb ass owner! It's sad...the dog had no choice, but the owner did! They both should've went home and saw this on the news! But NOOOOOO, he had to be a jackass and now the poor dog is more than likey dead :pout:

Here's my whole contingent on the the situation. I think more of animals in most instances because they are placed in situations by their owners...the animal has no choice...it's forced to go along with whatever situation the owner places it in and in THIS case, sadly the dog is the victim because of its dumb ass owner...

It just breaks my heart to see an animal hurt in a situation that clearly could have been avoided :(

So I just saw this thread and not gonna read all 500+ posts, but I know a lot of people are saying the cop should have used less force first (Deadly force as a last resort). And just thought I'd throw this out there... If you pay close attention, they sprayed the dog with pepper spray about 5-10 seconds before pulling out the gun and shooting. It had little to no effect on the dog. The officer then moved to the next level of force appropriately. That is all.

model citizen just taking his dog on a brisk walk around the hood.

Martinez went home and posted the video at his Facebook friends' urging. He never expected it to go viral.
But the video doesn't tell the whole story, he said.
Rosby seemed to be testing boundaries of Hawthorne police officers who were involved in the SWAT standoff, Martinez said.
"It was kind of like he was seeing how far he could go and get away with it," Martinez said. "He was asking where's the black cops and the Hispanic cops? Why there's only one ethnicity there. Little things like that."
Police said they arrested Rosby because he was coming too close to officers during the standoff and blaring music from his car.
Martinez, a dog owner who loves rottweilers, said memory of the shooting haunts him, especially when he hears the music that was playing when the shots were fired.
"I can't hear that Usher song again," he said. If I do, it just brings back memories right away."

“Apparently this isn’t the first time that Rosby has had issues with the local police. His prior record includes convictions for resisting arrest, battery and driving under the influence. Rosby, a black man, has filed six complaints alleging mistreatment and racial profiling by the Hawthorn Police,” the Daily Mail notes.
“There’s been a pattern of harassment against him and other African-Americans in Hawthorne. Last July, the police responded to his home and beat him unnecessarily, then threw him in jail for no reason. We sued for that,” Gulden, Rosby’s attorney, said.
Gulden said he plans to file a lawsuit against the Hawthorne Police Department.

Don't compare Trayvon Martin to this dog incident. If I was Trayvon, I would beat the crap out of George Zimmerman too. Only a officer of the law or security guard with badge will stop me. Not some hot shot who has a gun. I can guarantee that if Zimmerman had no gun, he would not have the guts to follow or instigate the situation.

Yep. Killed lots of animals. Even seen a deer with no head still kicking.
I shot a goat on the run, blew its head off with my timberwolf and it ran another 50 feet before it gradually fell over to the side and the legs kept "running" for another 30+ seconds.
    I loved that rifle

That video is hard to watch. Poor rotty :(

Dam this is one of those that will continue to be argued over.:deadhorse::argue:
Too bad about the dog, hated to see it get shot. I know that's why people are upset..

But the dogs owner is >>>>>>>THE<<<<<<< reason that it happened, he's a "typical" hood rat idiot, Everything he did from the start of the video to the end proves it.. Can't blame the cop for doing his job, I'm willing to bet he didn't wake up and say "I hope I get to shoot a dog today"..period end of story..:amen:

I bet not, he probably has/had a scanner in his car, and rides around looking for stuff like that to get into, "one" of the reasons he left his stereo on as loud as he did, to drown out the scanner, and further confuse the situation, to make the cops focus on him and hopefully distract the cops so his buddy could get away and make the cops look like bad ones for not catching the bad guy or try and make them look racist are something ( a lose lose for the cops ) or whatever else he could possibly do to make the situation worse than what it was for everybody in the surrounding area. Looks like he did too, in the process of pissing off more people towards the cops, HE got his dog killed.. Just a guess.

    Sad excuse not to continue.

Like the ones in this video? Sometimes you have to do things you don't want to do. I'm sure he wasn't jumping for joy after he shot the dog. Decisions like this are made every day. Maybe best you don't continue if you wouldn't be able to do the same.

I'd like to see what the people who think the LEO wass wrong would do if a dog like that came at them walking down the street... Imagine for a second your your on a walk or run and that dog comes at you... Would you rather fight it off or if you had a weapon shoot it? I love all animals and hate to see them suffer. I couldn't watch the video but my health and safety is more important along with some fellow officers or friends.

Well they'd throw rainbows and fairy dust at it..that would surely stop the impending mauling that's about to begin. People who have no clue about the reality of what it's like to do this job, will always have this attitude.

No - Lethal force to meet lethal force. Lowest level to gain compliance, but that doesn't limit a response. And the legal definition of lethal force includes serious/permanent physical injury. 500-600 lbs of force from a dog bite is lethal force.

While I am middle of the road on this one, your analogy is IMHO wrong. As a private citizen if a dog came at me unprovoked I'd be justified in shooting it. If I handcuffed his master and didn't let the master respond to take care of the dog then it wouldn't be exactly unprovoked. Not saying it wasn't legally justified, it's just a shame all around. No matter what this officer won't get his day in the court of public opinion, he'll be vilified no matter what.

What do you think would have happened if you let the guy out of his handcuffs? He would have brought his dog back to his car, secured him and then allowed the cops to handcuff him without incident?...

I wouldn't be willing to take that chance. I would imagine that with his history the LEO's probably knew him. So knowing that they are absolutely not going to let him out of his cuffs (rightfully so).

Again... This was a horrible outcome and I wish things would/could have been done differently but with little time to react and the circumstances surrounding it it was a justified decision.

The officer had to make a split second decision that many of us would hate to make. I can't say that I would have handled it any different.

As a person who has been through "Shoot, No shoot" training in the CG I can say that he did what he was trained to do. Shoot until the subject is fully subdued and every shot counts.

As said before, lethal force is warranted in a lethal action. The dog meant to protect its owner all means necessary.

Bingo! Did the arresting officer"s" properly asses the situation prior to approaching his subject as trained to do so?

A dog can be placed in police cruiser until animal control shows up right?

was he going to arrest and leave the dog there?

was their approach more so aggressive demonstration of power provoked by a idiot yet complying passerby?

And was the third officer directed to intervene by arresting officer??
