I wouldn’t blame the turbo on that. The 6.0 had such a restrictive exhaust because of the emissions on that engine, that’s what probably killed your turbo.

That engine is known to be rock solid after you dump about $5k or so into it.

I disagree. Every semi truck on the road has a turbo on it today and logs hundreds of thousands of miles, maybe even a million or more, under heavy loads, throughout the trucks lifespan. You hardly ever hear of a semi having turbo failure.

If there’s any company I’d trust to do a turbo model anything right, it’s Honda and Toyota.

Yeah...I’ve heard that one before. Your line of thinking is basic. That just because Freight haulers that log millions of miles exist, turbos must be ok.

Eh. It’s not the case. I get paid big money to keep heavy fleets on the road, so I see what happens behind the curtain. I’ll say it again- the ONLY thing that sees a million miles on a tractor is the engine block. Turbos get replaced often. Egr valves. Head swaps. Pistons and sleeves. Virtually every single thing that ISNT the block gets replaced and doesn’t even come close to a million miles. So uh...yeah. Basic.

“You hardly ever hear...” bro. I replace at least 2 turbos a week. Come on lol.

...^^^... I can see your point ... and yes ... I would trust Honda and Toyota the most on turbos ... but several of the mechanics at Honda also suggested the base 2.4L over the 1.5L turbo for longevity.

In a vehicle of that size and purpose ... like the CRV ... I hate to wind up that tiny motor with a turbo when I can have almost double the cubes with a naturally aspirated RAV4 and the same basic mileage.

FWIW ... I had a CRV a few years ago with that 2.4L and loved it. Maybe I am just super cautious with a turbo for longevity in a passenger type (non-performance) vehicle.

    This.

I was quite confused by that guy saying turbos dont blow on semis. Got 2 sitting in my bays right now, one with 98k and a blow head gasket, and another 150k with a leaking tranny and a blown turbo

Hey, man. Think you can come get this truck running for me? Independent shop quoted me $13k in repairs. All the beer you can drink, and you wont look like a wannabe wearing your new cowboy hat in these parts

yea turbos are funny they either fail all the time or they dont..
its too expensive of a part to gamble on whether it will fail at 70k or 250k..
oh and some of the ecoboosts have two of them for god sakes

Im amazed the turbo failed before the egr cooler. That entire truck was a dumpster fire until you deleted all the EPA mandated crap on it. I made a good living for years working on and selling 6.0/6.4 parts. Lol.

Most of the turbos failing on civilian vehicles fail due to lack of maintenance. Im really iffy on these new oil change intervals. IE: The new turbo Land Rovers? 21,000 mile intervals. Nope sorry bud, oil changes are much cheaper than turbos and timing setups.

yea and you need to work them. They need to open up. Lots of guys getting them and just going to corner store and back. I imagine most of the people having success with ecoboost do alot of highway driving and alot of towing but at the end of the day, its and extra 2 parts and extra 2 points of expensive failure.

Turbos will eventually fail, and if youre truck makes it to 180k with original turbos awesome! but eventually they will fail and the cost to replace them will cost more then the truck itself.

so getting 200k+ ecoboosts consistently becomes more and more difficult, because its just not worth it.

Depends on your definition of worth it. I am personally a HUGE fan of forced induction, specifically turbochargers. If you replace them with factory units from the dealer they are crazy expensive, aftermarket turbos (and usually a larger upgrade) can be had for relatively cheap.

Depends on the vehicle. OEM turbos for the 3.5 Ecoboost are $600 each. It’s really not that pricey for the part. Labor might be pricey.

I didn’t say they don’t fail, I said they don’t fail as often as people think they do.

And these trucks in question, are these modern trucks with modern diesel emissions nonsense? Because blaming the turbo for failing while the truck still has all the modern diesel emissions crap isn’t fair. That stuff kills turbos.
