Wasnt it only a few years ago Ram added their 1500 eco diesel, and is t the gladiator getting an eco diesel as well? Kinda seems like the small diesel market is picking up if you ask me

I was talking about the Tundra with a diesel. Not sure what you mean by mid sized

I mean, ive only been in the auto service industry for 16 years. What do I know. Maybe if $600 is alot for a repair bill you should stick to 1985 trucks with 9 moving parts that you can buy for $400 for the lot at autozone. Or maybe you're referencing the people that buy used trucks for $40k plus out of warranty then cant afford to fix them when they break.

Edit: That came off really short and snarky. Wasn't my intention.
As for fuel, well that really varies. Some areas diesel is cheaper. Others it’s more expensive. Where I live diesel is ~ $.30 more a gallon. Fuel economy usually is better with a diesel, especially running a tuner, so that’s a plus. You may recover some of the added expense from buying one when you sell it, there is still a lot of depreciation. Around my area usually they lose value faster than their gas counterparts.
You have to drive a whole bunch for fuel economy to be a really noticeable part in your budget. And I mean a LOT.

I heard diesel and assumed everyone is gonna start crying about how they want a Tacoma diesel. Thought that’s what you were talking about. I do see it making more sense in a tundra, for towing purposes for the few who need it.

MPG is significantly better with a diesel. My 2000 Ford Excursion heavy ass MF with the 7.3 diesel got 22mpg and didnt matter if it was empty or I had 8 people riding and towing my 28' boat full of gear over a mountain pass. My Tundra gets 10.5 on average with just me in it. 30 gallon tank = 300 miles more per tank. That's significant no matter how you look at it. For efficiency, torque and overall useful power you can not beat the diesel and that's why it's never going away.

I agree the diesel Tacoma would be ridiculous and useless.

I would 100% of bought a diesel Tacoma if it was an option. If they come out with one which they probably won’t. I’d likely trade in for it.

Someone did the math here once but you need something like 150k miles before having a diesel offsets the cost of the diesel engine + diesel fuel vs gas

I didn't do any fact checking but I'm just gonna run with it

Sometimes it's not always about cost and the diesel costs more because it can do more

If I needed a diesel truck, id have a REALLY hard time buying anything besides a 6.7L Ford.

Let's say I put 40,000 miles on a truck in 4 years

Tacoma V6
40,000 mi / 20 mpg * $2.30/gal = $4,600 in gas
5 oil changes @ $40 ea = $200/ 4 years
$4,800 total or $1,200/yr

Ram POWER MF'n WAGON
40,000 mi / 15 mpg * $2.30/gal = $6,133 in gas
5 oil changes @ $40 ea = $200/ 4 years
$6,333 total or $1,500/yr

Some diesel truck
40,000 mi / 24 mpg * $2.60/gal = $4,333 in diesel
5 oil changes @ $100 ea = $500 /4 yrs
$4833 total or $1,207/yr

Diesel is unequivocally more expensive than a V6 Tacoma in every single imaginable way. This proves it, end of discussion.
