Saw this while searching through Amazon. Decided I would trigger those V6 drivers who constantly bad mouth the 2.7 :D

A little of this and a little of that.
I could live with that badge in the engine compartment of my ‘13 Regular cab.

    Ford?

I have looked at the Ford 2.7 badge and it’s not the same.

I ordered this one for a Hilux off eBay for like $15 - it is super nerdy and I love it, haha

The 2.7 has decent mid-range torque and power but that's about it. This engine could make more torque and power overall but for some reason, Toyota won't have it. It's a pest-control pickup truck engine.

It's just a lot of truck to move for a small motor. That's all there is to it.

There's no replacement for displacement. :notsure:

Back when I was young and strong (long ago and far away), power to weight ratio ruled the day (along with a little gear ratio thrown in for spice).

The 3.5 power and torque numbers reduced to 2.7 litres is 214 hp and 201 lbs.-ft. of torque.

Power to weight ratio still rules.

The method to develop the power has advanced.

I like mine, it's basically a new 1990s truck and has about the same power-to-weight ratio as an '89 4Runner with the 3-liter V6.

IMO it is fine with the 6-speed automatic where you can slap it over into 4th when you are in the hills but it can relax down to 1900 RPM in 6th in the flatlands. I would never have this with the old 4-speed automatic.

The one thing that is is a little strange to me is that it feels like it upshifts too soon, like the redline is too low. Unlike a lot of cars I've had that start running out of breath at 5000 RPM or so, it is still pulling well when it shifts at 5200 or whatever... feels like it could easily rev out about 5800-6000 before shifting for a little more top-end power.

It's funny to think that my 1984 Camaro I had as a teen with the 5.0 made 170HP off the assembly line and that my 2010 Tacoma 2.7 is within 10 or less of that. Different applications and whatnot of course..but my single cab does everything I need it to do.

PS I'm sure my Camaro was more than that when I got it, as it was a DEA undercover car..giggle..

While my frame is being replaced I've had a 2019 or 2020 Nissan Frontier DCSB for about 6 weeks. Decent enough but more truck than I need in the DC area..plus the V6 has more than enough kick

The "muscle" cars from the showroom in the 70-80s were hamstrung by the EPA and the oil embargo. That is when the engines were detuned and pollution stuff patched on. Nothing worked well, although it did work.

It took a few years for the engine technology to be tested, proven and brought to market.

Toyota is not going to make it any more powerful as they don't want you to buy that engine. It's there for fuel economy and fleets but I like it because it's a cast iron dinosaur just like I'd have bought the 6 if it was a 2JZ derivative =) man I wish they'd put an I6 in the truck that'd be powerful, smooth, and reliable.
