My truck has trouble starting after i put gas in it. it takes about 15 to 20 seconds to start then it will idel roughly for 5 mins, shutting off if i dont keep it reved. any other time truck starts right up perfectly. ive tried a new fuel filter, leaving the gas cap off when starting up and putting various amounts of fuel in. any advice will help as i do not have the money for a repar shop. thanks

    Couple of questions:

    1) This ONLY occurs after fueling? Never after a warm restart without fueling?

    2) How many times has this happened?

    3) Have you tried different gas stations?

    4) Have you Seafoam'd it?

Sounds like time for tune up. Replace plugs, clean the MAF, replace plug wires and cap, clean throttle body. Maybe that will fix it. All cheap things to do that probably needs done anyways. Oh and seafoam it too.

Sounds like fuel is getting into the evap system.

Still does it with different fuel amounts says that it's some kind of backsplash causing it.

If it only does it right after you fuel I think you might have a vent problem in the tank...ie, something is causing a vapor lock/vaccum in the tank to where it doesn't allow fuel to be fed to the motor.

Haha we're not on Twitter Facebook or wherever that's from...:D

    But seriously, welcome to TW!

Have you had trouble with the petrol pump prematurely shutting off when fueling at all? That is also indicative of issues with the evap system and charcoal canister.

But from what you've said, I would agree with the other members on the evap system. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to fix it. I also searched the 1st get forum and came up with zilch. A quick scan of the google-inator didn't give me much either. I would talk to your trusted mechanic (I hope you have somebody to turn to) and also check the FSM (there's a download link in ) for our trucks.

    Sorry I can't help more.

    Ditto.

When it's happened to me or people I know, the problem has corrected itself, but that's been:
    A - On a motorcycle
B - ONE overfill that flooded into the evap when the sun heated the tank

Bike ran exactly as described above... took about 15 minutes of nursing it around the parking lot before she was able to hit the road again.

The evap system has a number of parts.
The running problems are because excess fuel is being pulled into the intake.
The source of this fuel is the charcoal canister.
Normally, if it's this bad, the procedure would be to replace the canister, BUT....

There are a number of valves and vacuum lines in the system and a malfunction of any of them can cause these issues.

I hate to say "take it to the dealer"... but it does need to go to someone who knows their stuff about smog equipment from your year and model.
