Hey everybody, this is my first post here, I have a 2019 Tacoma TRD Pro. Today I was in an accident on the highway. I was going 70 mph in the left lane, next to me in the middle lane was a 2011 Sorento and next to them was a RAM 1500 driving like an asshole. The RAM hit the Sorrento which hit me and spun me out 3-4x and the engine stalled (6 speed auto) when attempting to restart, it cranked for about 10-20 seconds with a few service messages, it drove fine after starting and I drove it home. I've heard it is common for an extended crank after a vehicle spin out but what exactly causes this? I have heard a few things. I will likely be taking it to my dealer's body shop as my policy will cover OEM parts and I'll probably have them do my 5K mile service just while it's there, should I have them do an inspection of drivetrain components as well or is it not really necessary? 5k miles ago I had my oil changed, rear diff, transmission fluid, and the fuel pump recall performed. Thank you!

sounds like you are ok, which is good. I think most vehicles have a fuel pump cutoff of some sort, that may be it. I am sure the collision center will know for sure.

All the centripetal force placed on the engine during the spin, causes the valve springs to get loose, which causes the timing chain guides to get loose, which tells the fuel pump to turn off.

    I'm sorry...

    WHAT

    o_O

Do you realize the amount of force all those components are under while in normal operation?

If a spin could generate enough force to move those components the occupant would be little more than raspberry jelly.

A few doughnuts isn't going to send the valve train to pieces.

Vehicles typically take longer to crank after an accident because there's hundreds of sensors that just registered really irregular values followed by an unexpected and abnormal engine shut off, usually caused by the wheels turning the drivetrain backwards and the startup system is doing extend checks and verifications to confirm it was a fluke and nothing is in danger of damaging itself by continuing operation.

This can be registered by G sensors of the airbag system as well as many other drive train systems such as braking and steering input relative to monitored speed but no engine is going to have it's valve train flung apart by centrifugal force.

The only thing the centrifugal force could impact that greatly would be the oil, there is potential to have all the oil gets slung up high on one side of the oil pan and not be getting picked up by the tube starving the pump but that wouldn't cause an engine shutdown or a long start.

I bought a money shifted Scion xD and it only dropped a few valve caps, the tool to compress the springs to reinstall the valve caps was 2 foot long and barely had enough leverage to do so that shit is in there TIGHT.

Glad you're ok. I think the consensus would be fuel cutoff - switch needs a reset.

Inertia fuel cutoff and/or the low pressure fuel pump pulled in some air during the spin, hence the stall. The inertia fuel cutoff automatically resets with a key cycle. The long crank is to be expected to prime and purge the fuel system again.

    Okay.

How is that at all relevant?

Unless you're admitting you're out of your element.

Then alright, but unnecessary, not trying to call you out, just trying to correct your gross misinformation.

I'm not questioning your intelligence, or threatening your man hood my guy, maybe that's a sensitive subject for you, I'm just saying that in 15 years of auto mechanics engineering and general hooniganery I have never once with anything had the valve train come loose after a spin.

This includes the Ferraris I have ridden and spun out in on the autocross tracks.

Long start, especially after stalling the engine from sudden hard breaking and or rolling backwards, absolutely.

But I've never seen a motor drop a spring that wasn't from valve float, or throw a guide that wasn't from timing loss.

Not trying to call you stupid, or why you feel the need to defend yourself but damn.

Honestly, I thought it was so preposterous I didn't think anyone would take it seriously. I genuinely apologize. Sometimes my jokes miss the mark lol.

Where exactly did you hide the joke? Must've been affected by all the centripetal force

In the absurdity of the statement. Gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette. They can't all be winners I guess.

Yup, ok, just shaken up. Thank you all for the input, I originally thought it was the inertia switch as well but some said you needed to reset it and others said it automatically restarts when pushing button to restart (I have push to start) that makes sense. Y’all are funny in this thread too lol

Damage really isn’t too bad. Quote from dealer collision is $4200, not including any hidden damage, I’m awaiting another quote as well from a different shop

If it drives well… take the cash and send it. Edit: and you’ll have stories to tell for the next 20 years
