I have a 2015 v6 TRD Pro, and when I put gas in it, it never starts right away. It takes turning the key for 10-15 sec, 2-3 times, and then finally it’ll start but the engine is usually shaky for 30 sec or so. This happens every time I put gas in it, at least more than a few gallons. So far it’s starts eventually every time, but pretty unnerving! Mechanics keep telling me the evap canister is flooding because of topping off, but I never top off. After this initial startup after fueling, it starts without issue and runs mostly fine (maybe slightly lower mpg and seems to have slightly less power on acceleration). Getting codes P0171 / P0174 / P0441 / P0455.

Over time I’ve replaced evap canister purge valve, gas cap, and the canister itself. Canister replacement fixed the issue for a few days and then codes and fueling issue came back.

Any idea what else I should be looking for this? Any tests to run or obvious parts to look at/clean?

    thanks,
    Dan

Sounds like your Purge VSV is sticking or leaking, disconnect the hose and electrical connector from it while the engine is idling if there's still vacuum present at the port it's bad.

You could also disconnect the purge line shown above and cap off the port on the intake. Drive around like that for a few days, refuel a couple times and see if the problem happens.

Also wondering if the purge valve is leaking

Thanks— I’ll give those a try tomorrow.

@Dm93 I tried that out and you’re right — when I disconnect the hose and electrical, it’s still pulling air into the VSV. That’s what you mean, right? Seems like it shouldn’t be too complex to replace that, even for a newbie like me. Here’s hoping that’s the fix — thanks again!

That likely will fix all your issues, when the valve sticks open with a full tank it will suck raw gas into the engine causing a rich condition.
Shake the line going to it and make sure no charcoal (the charcoal canisters will come apart if they get too much raw fuel sucked in them) comes out as that will stick/clog the valve.

    That’s awesome; thanks so much.

I also just tried what @b_r_o suggested, capping the intake. Filled the tank and it started right away, without issue. Thanks to both of you! Ordering the part today.
