Love seeing trial and error research like this. I know this is an old thread but what happened next?? Did putting foam/whatever on the entire back of the cab help?

Yep kept the foam in the vent. Noise was reduced a lot. There was a problem with pressure in the cab though. Had to only use heat and AC on recirculating mode or you would feel the pressure in your ears.

Oh no, I was referring to one of the images in your first post. It looks like you put something black over the entirety of your cab wall?

I don't have this vent on my 2011 DC. I thought I saw a vent somewhere when I did my sound deadening but I can't remember. I do know after sound deadening my doors do require more force to close with the windows up, which I like.

Oh okay, cool! And how much did that affect the road noise?

I could not see a vent on my 2014 standard cab, although the tool box makes it hard to see down there.

There is a substantial difference in the amount of force it takes to close the doors if a window is left down.

I have a 2015 Access Cab and found it has the vent behind the seat. This weekend I stripped out the interior to install sound deadening material - had to take it home before job was done, so just re-installed the driver's seat for the trip. WOW! I know now where the road noise comes from. I guess it was more muted with the back seat panel installed as the sound would not be so localized, but driving on the freeway with a bare back wall the noise sounded like a window was half way down.

I think the theory of needing a place for the air displaced by airbag deployment makes sense. If all six of them deployed it would cause a major pressure increase in the truck without having a means of expelling the excess.

I think I may experiment with adding some type of foam pieces that will allow passage of air but deaden the noise coming in - kind of like designing a mini cab-air muffler system :notsure:

I took all the plastic molding and stuff out from behind the seats in my 2014 double cab a few months ago and did not see a vent like that. I just left it as bare metal and didn't install any replacement sound dampening. Road noise is about 10 or 20% louder than before but it doesn't really bother me any - definitely worth it for the extra space.

I have no idea what that vent is for but the airbag displacement theory makes sense.

Well, after filling the vent with breathable foam, the noise of the air rushing trying to get out is louder than the road noise before. I have settled on putting MLV on the outside of the vent, and will line the inside with ensolite to hopefully dampen the incoming soundwaves.

And Toyota put these things in because? Just about every thing on the road to day has the rear air vents and for good reason.

Did you try putting MLV on the outside of the vent and ensolite on the inside? How did that work? That is the same idea I have for my 2014 access cab.

Seems to be marginally better but not as much as I had hoped.

Do you think there is any possibility the vents could be damaged, or could have been incorrectly installed, in any way? I don't know if some people are more accepting of the noise or if their trucks are less noisey than other trucks. I don't understand why more people aren't complaining. I have noticed that it appears my truck is slightly less noisey if the air control is on recirculate.

Haven't seen any thing in years with out them probably since they got rid of vent windows other wise the HVAC system would not work at all well or you would have to lower a window to get the air to move. Fairly
unpleasant in the snow or rain.
