I forgot I camped at Cottonwood before I got married... So (5) times for me in the park stretching back (9) years. Based on your long experience, I'd say you're right. We've camped at Jumbo Rocks three times, and Belle.

I like Belle the best. Smaller seems better, it has two loops separated by some distance, so that helps a lot. Jumbo Rocks is a joke. WAY too many people in such a small area.

One can never have too many light bars.

I know my truck isn't in the picture but it's too good of a view and the truck got us to the spot. This is in Sequoia National Park.

Yeah, I was out in Cottonwood Springs last weekend too (only campground with a site available on Friday afternoon). Seems worse then other campgrounds I've stayed at in JT, people partying until 3am..... Nice sunset though.

You guys need to walk away from the dumpy National Parks and start camping in or near your amazing State Parks. Not that I'm biased or anything.

Too funny! I love my state parks. I'm still planning on coming to Red Rock, maybe in December, will PM you in advance if it happens. :)

I'm sure you know this, but the more often you go the easier it gets. I think less is more. Our little family is at the stage where we are fine tuning, and optimizing as we go.

That's what we doeach time we get a chance to go out. Try something new and refined our skills.

Just get out and enjoy with what you have. For several years we had cheap gear and slowly upgraded as things worn out.

I'd rather go to Glacier, Yellowstone or Grand Teton any day over any of the MT parks. Not a lot of our parks offer camping, most are located adjacent to a busy highway, and most are oriented to a single activity and or geologic feature... kinda boring. Bannack State Park is a ghost town and about the only site I visit regularly, usually in the off season.
Being in a Runner isn't an excuse. Just gotta learn to pack efficiently. I could live for 5 days out of my 1st gen, imagine the same to be true for my Runner. Gas and ice are the only things I need to visit civilization for.

Try a "crap strap" or luggable loo or a fold and go potty.

 MT state parks cost $5 and are included in our vehicle registrations. $35 for out of staters

Ours are $5-7 per visit. I had over 10 visits buy mid July and had only had the pass a few weeks at that point. I have a handful within a 30-40 minutes from home. Eldorado for example is a huge climbing park, was really busy the couple times I went there, but i was the only one fishing the stream that runs through it.

California tried the vehicle registration thing a few years ago to fund parks and give free day use to vehicles with CA plates. It failed miserably. The top level annual pass is $195, next step down is $125.

    http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1049

Also, most of the National Parks in California are massively overcrowded and no fun to camp in, Death Valley being a rare exception. National Forest and Bureau of Land Management property typically offer free "dispersed" camping which is always the way to go.
